soft diff bushes?

something that has bothered since new. I have noticed what I thought was due to the tailshaft flexing winding up and unwinding.... a sort of back and forth surges errr errr errr in second gear on slight acceleration around a sweeping corner.

Something I read made me think it might be due to soft diff bushes? I'd appreciate thoughts people.


Note that our car is auto with torsen diff.

Main contributors are the engine mounts and the diff bushings.

I put the whiteline diff bushing inserts in the first summer I had the car, stops a ton of diff movement with minimal increase in noise.

Brilliant thanks Turbo86. Especially the youtube which (as one comment pointed out) shows the diff movement.

To achieve what I want and considering I do not want to introduce too much harshness it looks like just replacing one pair of bushes to start might do the trick, and look like something simple. I'll ask Whiteline.

I think I know exactly what you're talking about as I'm really noticing it now with the summer wheels on. It's like this back and forth pigeon head movement

That's it. Except it less like clockwork as it has a bit of a springy feel.

Yes. God it's annoying. So they're saying trans and diff inserts help? Don't wanna splurge on engine mounts

I really liked the subframe bushings, I liked the diff bushings less, ymmv, maybe if I'd done them in the opposite order I'd feel that the diff bushings were better idfk. There's a balance to stiffening it up, a little stiffer seems to sync the car up to itself, too much and you're back to feeling drivetrain lash imho.

^^This, I'd do the rear subframe inserts/mounts first. See if you want to go any further.

I have both and am going to remove the rear diff carrier insert bushings. I'm going to keep the diff bushings in place. I like it a lot but want to see if I can dial it back just a touch. I can always put them back...

I'm still amazed at how a couple of bushing can make such a difference :/

Which did you install first? I did the diff inserts first and really liked them. Then I did the subframe inserts. I also liked them, but the difference was not as noticeable. I wonder if the order matters and, if so, how much.

Subframe first, loved em, no downsides. About a week or three later the diff bushings went in.

Probably any stiffening back there is a positive, but I think you hit diminishing returns as everything gets reinforced and there may be an over-stiff possibility for some people. Eventually I'll try pulling a pair of inserts out of the diff, but there are other things to tinker with in the meantime.
