Or put fiber glass over the stock piece then lay the carbon fiber inside the mold you just created? That would work correct?

it wouldnt work well its too flexible of a material to hold the shape for a production part. a metal mold would be ideal, but expensive.

Furthermore, resin transfer molding (hand lay up) results in relatively heavy and weak parts. The resin is the heavy and weak part of the composite. So you want to minimize the amount of resin in the composite. Resin transfer results in really low fiber % by volume and by weight. You really want to use prepreg or you have to come up with a method to extract as much resin as possible. ideally you want to get down to like 20% resin by volume. even with vacuum bagging you can't really get below 50% by volume.

Be sure to test fit them before final clear coat Just to not find out that they dont fit at some places after CF...

Yours looks damn nice - you got all the CF texture straight and nice even on the edges

First off, fiberglass can and is very frequently used to make molds. You would just need to make sure the backup structure for the mold was stiff enough to keep everything true and the fiberglass would be more than strong enough to hold the contours.

Secondly, RTM is not the same thing as hand layup and can, when done properly, yield very good ratios. Maybe not as good as prepreg, but pretty good.

On top of that, these parts are totally cosmetic. A hand layup is going to add such a minimal amount of weight (especially since to look good it's going to need a heavy clear coat anyway) that it's a perfectly acceptable technique.

Wow looks great. Did you do a wrap as well or did you start from scratch? Seems like a wrap is the way easier way to go...

Dont want to hijack this tread - but it has been talked over on my project tread... I did a CF overlay on most of the interior plastics...

There is slight problem with Shifter surround, cuz if you make a thick layer of CF / resin - it will just not fit... I had to sand / trim some center console plastic to make it fit... also - forgot to test fit before final clear coat - so messed my Clear once installing But now everything got re-coated again...

Mate this is amazing but I am sure it is going to cost a fortune. Carbon fiber, expensive thing.

You should do the door handle as well!
Also is it possible to apply a brushed blue metal onto the plastic? :S

The handles cost $200
And ya I'm planning on doing more parts in CF. My next part was the setting wheel parts and it was crazy easy to get off. There are 3 clips that you need to work and the bag comes right off. And then just 2 screws and off it comes.
