With winter coming again, I got to thinking about this after one of our old customers was gleefully telling me how his impreza was awesome in the snow...

It's not that an 86 is bad in the snow, it's actually pretty good, but not for the reason you might think. It's a modern car with ABS, traction control, stability control and even an LSD, but that basically just puts it on even ground with any other modern car with nannies, that just means it brakes and steers and is as safe as any other modern car with 4 wheels, 4 brakes and two wheel steering.

What makes it good in the winter and what makes it a bit freaky in the beginning is how intimate it makes you with the amount of traction you have. You feel like you're slipping a lot more often than with a "normal car", but it's not because you have less traction, it's because you can actually feel traction on a spectrum and your transition throughout that spectrum. You can be a better driver in winter when you have that information, and a loss of control needs to be a lot more dramatic to creep up on you.

Normal FWD/AWD car: Always feel in control, rarely in as much control as you think.
RWD sport car: Always be reminded of how little control you have.
