That said, in both the SE and XSE with the bigger wing, it needs some... less oem looking rims and some meat

style wise its good, but the tire/rim combo are cheap. Maybe toyota assumed it would be swapped out anyways?

I cheap'd out on the wheels, they offered 18s as an optional upgrade which do look much better. However I kept the 16s since tires will be cheaper, and the ride is softer and tuned for the 16s. Also the 16s are made by Enkei.

I also in good conscious cannot put bigger wheels on the corolla than I have on my FRS.

My plan at the moment though is to eventually get some RPF1s on the FRS, and then the FRS stock wheels go on the corolla. That's the trickle down part effect.

This is the upper trim XSE model that does have the 18s I'm talking about:

To add to my running review as I drive this car around more:

Something about this car that is interesting in terms of comparing it to the twins. The power is obviously less but the torque figure is about the same. The torque on the corolla is is 151lb-ft at 4,800 rpm. Which makes it feel like it has some grunt, but make no mistake it is not as fast as the twins, but in a straight line it really isn't as far off as you might think.

In terms of handling the car drives really well for a hatchback but again the twins have spoiled me and although the corolla doesn't have tons of body roll, compared to the oem suspension on my '13 FRS it has more body roll than I would personally like. Also it does inspire some confidence but again not at the same degree as the twins, throwing it into a corner will net you typical fwd understeer, but the raw cornering grip isn't much to be impressed about, which the body roll doesn't exactly help. Also note this is on the 16 wheels.

Although the performance is less than the twins as to be expected, it is very comfortable. The ride is better than the twins, it does a good job absorbing some serious bumps. The road noise isn't super quiet but if your used to a twin it is quiet. There isn't that much feedback from the clutch, that combined with the super quiet engine and muted exhaust I find myself checking the tac far more often as I can't as easily judge the revs by feel and sound alone (which is very easy in the twins as you know).

257-HP Toyota GR Corolla Turbocharged Hot Hatch Is Coming

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a3...onfirmed-2022/

Quote:
With the same turbo three-cylinder as the rally-inspired GR Yaris, this car aims to prove that a Corolla can be as cool as a GTI.
  • Toyota is working on a hot-hatch version of the Corolla that will wear the Gazoo Racing (GR) nameplate.
  • It will use the same turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine as the GR Yaris sold elsewhere.
  • Expect the GR Corolla to arrive in the U.S. in 2022 with a starting price around $30,000.

This story originally appeared in the May 2020 issue of Car and Driver as part of our 25 Cars Worth Waiting For package. Our sneak preview of the most exciting cars coming in the next few years draws on knowledge from leaked product-development plans, spy photos, and loose-lipped insiders mixed in with information that has already been officially released. The reporting for this story was completed in February and early March, before the auto industry began feeling major effects of the coronavirus pandemic. As many automakers are now delaying or pausing development programs, the debut and on-sale dates reported here may change.

A hot-hatch version of the Corolla is coming soon wearing a GR badge (for "Gazoo Racing"). It'll be Toyota's first sporty compact since the high-revving Corolla XRS from the mid-2000s. This car also will serve as an apology to Americans who are upset that we're not getting the awesome rally-inspired GR Yaris. (That car is based on the global Yaris, while the U.S.-market Yaris is a rebadged Mazda 2.) The GR Corolla should land in 2022, with a starting price around $30,000.

The GR Corolla will use the mighty turbocharged hamster wheel from the GR Yaris that pumps out 257 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque from just three cylinders displacing 1.6 liters. We wouldn't count on the GR Yaris's all-wheel-drive system making it stateside, but Toyota will have to offer a six-speed manual transmission in order for the GR Corolla to be considered a driver's car.

The same TNGA underpinnings as the standard Corolla will be in play, but upgraded with a stiffer suspension tune, bigger brakes, and larger wheels wrapped in grippy summer tires.

Toyota is working hard to shed its reputation for being boring—a perception that is closely tied to the Corolla name. We appreciate that Toyota still offers it with a manual, but the 169-hp pseudo-sporty XSE that currently occupies the sportiest spot in the line just isn't enough. A true high-performance version with a strong engine and legitimate chassis upgrades could convince people that a Corolla can be as cool as a Volkswagen Golf GTI.

GR Corolla

Well we've heard the rumors and now the mill has turned up a notch...

Courtesy of Car Sensor via The Drive we could get a 296 HP, AWD Corolla 5 door. Obviously it's all clickbait conjecture at this point, but that would certainly leave me feeling a bit better.

I was bummed about them not giving us the GR Yaris but... if my math is correct, the GR Yaris has .091 HP per lb (257 HP/2822 LBS). The current Corolla 5 door weighs 3060 lbs, so if the GR version adds 100 lbs to the curb weight (which honestly, it probably won’t - the transmission will be heavier, but I suspect there will be weight savings elsewhere), it will still have .094 HP per lb. It could get all the way up to 3253 lbs and keep the same power to weight ratio as the Yaris.

All that is to say, I’m suddenly a bit more excited for a GR Corolla. My FR-S will be 10 years old next year, so I might seriously consider a switch.

So it's more news than we've had to date. Thanks for your input though.

"Could Offer" is meaningless. Same as "might offer, might not offer", "possibly offer, possibly not offer".

From the article:
"Could Offer", "might outperform", "alleged to", "possibly that", "claims to be".
Yep, quality reporting right there.

No matter what they offer in the rest of the world, I would not put it past Toyota of North America to use the name and give us a normally aspirated 2.5 4 with front wheel drive.

Meh I have a feeling it'll be similar to the Mazda 3 turbo. A more or less standard corolla with a turbo.

Considering Toyota has a significant stake in Subaru, that would be a stretch for the NA market. It could be the hatch STI they'll never make again.

I'd guess it will be like the Corolla S was but maybe some better running gear.

I'm holding out for the GR MR2
