How does (very sensitive) passenger seat seat belt sensor work?

If I place my cell phone on the passenger seat,
it thinks someone is sitting there, and starts beeping a warning.

Are there sensors in the mesh?
Or is the seat being weighed?

It's pretty damn accurate!
Impressive

It's a capacitive sensor, so anything with an electric field will trigger it.

You must have a heavy cell phone. I put a backpack or gym bag (cell phone is usually in the gym bag too!) on the passenger seat all the time and it doesn't trigger the sensor.

I got lazy and did not search.
It's based on electrical signal not weight.
A cell phone triggers this very easily.
A bucket of paint does not.

Besides keeping the passenger seat belt locked,
anyone have a trick to get around this?

I might place a little container in the passenger seat.
Like the airline TSA "empty your pockets" bins.

You can disable the seatbelt 'ding' using Carista app

A wet umbrella tossed onto the passenger seat can also trigger the sensor.

I put one phone in a phone mount on the dash (of my own design), but I use one of these caddies from the As Seen On TV store at the mall to carry my second phone, my wallet and my beverage:

This post is a double er.

First off - search.

Second off - just don't put your cell phone on the seat.

Got it -

Don't put a bag of chips on the seat if it's a lined bag, even that will set the stupid thing off. The charger wire will also set it off if it's plugged in and flops over on the seat. Big PITA...

amcluesent hit it on the nail, disabling the warning light and beep in an OBD-II app or even a pirated version of tech stream is the best option, no warranty issues or electrical fuckery. Just a simple edit and change and when the battery is pulled it will reset.

Also important note is that if the seat gets wet it will also trigger the sensor, although I'm pretty sure there is a different DTC for the seat being wet vs something being on there internally, but all we see is the beep or passenger seat belt warning light.

Here's a post that explains it best:

Try just the phone without a case and see what happens, I've had my swiss army school backpack in the seat without it triggering the seat sensor as well, also with a laptop and phone inside. It just blocks the signal from interfering with the seat sensor.

Dealer can shut off these options using their Techstream software. I was quoted $60 to shut off this sound. Or, buy a cable and cracked Techstream ~$20.

The Carista app can also turn the chime off as well as many other things. Don't know how the cost compares to a legit Techstream but there may be a savings to be had.

My charger cable will even trigger it. I guess it has the advantage of not wearing out like the older membran weight based sensors. Like others, I disabled mine with Techstream.

A certain amount of weight does activate it as well though. My beagle is 35 lbs and if he sits just right in the seat, he'll trigger the warning. I think it triggers for less though, I'm pretty sure I had a couple gallons of milk there and that was also enough.
