Thats absurd a full 8+ years of sales to realize something is amok with the stands, HF better start qcing production batches better imo.

Ain't the first time I've been bit by em.. just glad I'm not dead, but I did check my serial # 69597 and it's not on the list I believe. But gonna have to be a little more selective in the future on certain things like that..especially safety weight bearing items

QC should have caught the problem. However, notice that all the articles talk about potential failure, not an actual failure. It may have gone that long without being detected because the stands didn't actually fail for that long. Or at all.

Just a reminder for us all that we shouldn't be relying on any 1 item to hold thousands of lbs from dropping on us. I always leave the floor jack there and use the stands in tandem.
Since it came up I wasn't aware that we could buy ANYTHING like this any more that wasn't made in China or other place that gets manufactured for the lowest bid.

i saw in my newsfeed somewhere that HF released a statement that they've had 11
minor injuries reported, with zero fatalities attributed to these jack stands.

https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-cul...d-jack-stands/

notice that the statement specifies that because of those 11 injuries, HF has chosen to play it safe and recall ALL jack stands produced by a specific factory, despite the fact that only a small percentage actually have the problem.

and AvE did a quick video last night about this as well. as usual, i think he brought up some fair points, first of which is that HF, despite their cheapness has still chosen to recall these jacks--many other companies would call 11 injuries a low margin of error...

HF should really change their name to Darwin Tools..
another reason to weight reduction

the Harbor freight notice says "...while under load and with a shift in weight..."

People put down Harbor Freight but not everyone can afford all tool truck prices, even as a professional technician, spending 10-20k on tools is absurd for a profession with average salary below 40k.

no one will know how the 11 injured people got it to occur, but how does the weight shift ? using all your might on a big prybar to some pain-in-the-asz suspension ? banging on a brake drum? friend messing around and shaking the vehicle?

after putting the weight on stands, I always position the floor jack under something, tight and in place to support the weight. I also use tires or other large/strong objects as back ups in case the jack stand fails---why...because It doesn't matter how much you paid for something, it can still fail. Just because you don't hear about a recall on some more high end jack stands, doesn't mean they have never failed.

in the rust belt, sledge hammers and grinders are part of the routine maintenance tool package. along with that one buddy that believes if a 5 pound sledge is good, a 10 pound sledge will remove that plastic clip even faster...

I called the closest one today. They had the replacements but ran out exchanging for the recall part. They offered a choice of a HF gift card that can be used for the replacements whatever the price.

I'm one to cheap out on tools and if it breaks it means I used it more often than I thought and need a better one so I'll get a quality one.

I also don't cheap on on stuff that will inflict a lot of injury to me. Had a cheap drill bit snap on me and almost injured my already ugly face.

That said, I agree with Impureclient and use multiple devices when I'm under the car. Using the Jack Stand, Lift, and if I took a wheel off I'm putting it under the car and using wheel chocks.

Me too.

I always use a floor jack extended and touching as close to the center of mass as possible wishfully thinking that if one of the stands breaks, the car/truck might stay balanced long enough to slide out on my creeper.

Except that I just realized that my floor jack is the same Pittsburgh brand as the crap jack stands. Time to go shopping.
