My second clutch in 110,000 miles is about to go out

I bought my 2013 FRS at 54,000 miles and around 70,000 miles my first clutch went out. now at 110,000 miles my second clutch is about to go out. Is this normal in these cars or is there something I can do to prevent further damage? Any advice is much appreciated.

Is it the clutch failing or the throw out bearing melting down and taking the clutch with it? There is a known issue with the TOBs in these cars and if they just replaced your first one with the same old part number then it would indeed only last so long.


Under stock power there is no real recorded history of clutch failures on these cars so beyond the TOB issue it is not "normal" at all to go through clutches that quickly.

As Tcoat mentioned, your clutch problems may be attributed a faulty TOB.

What makes you feel your clutch is about to go out again?

I would suggest that you have the clutch disk, pressure plate and TOB replaced. Make sure they use the NEW, improved TOB. Also, resurface the flywheel if necessary.

Barring abuse or giant power mods, that should last you another 75,000 miles.

It is my throw out bearing. I can hear a chirping and slight grinding noise when I'm engaging first gear. Can I just replace the bearing and save the clutch?

Yes. If you get to it in time. If it is still just noisy the rest of the clutch will be fine. If you wait until it fails and takes the clutch with it.
Make sure they use the new part number listed on the linked TSB

Involves pulling the tranny. Not a horrible task if you have the tools and resources. Loads of DIY info here for it.

My 2nd bearing went bad by ~105k miles too, was making all the symptomatic sounds of failure- shh shh shh sounds at idle and goose-honk sounds occasionally. I had the dealership recall done last summer and they put in a fresh bearing, the updated part, at no extra charge.

Trade in for an automatic.
But for real though, the manual transmission must be a third of the problems in here.

Did it have clutch changes during its 54k period?

Not even close. They don't take huge power well and the TOBs are bad in some.
The hard shift complaints are more just people used to the sloppy FWD systems than an issue and no doubt many of the other complaints are just people beating the crap out of them.

If this car is required for every day use, I'd suggest you take it into a shop.

If you do, ask them to evaluate what parts they would suggest be replaced. Make sure they understand to use the NEW TOB part.

If you have the time and tools and work space, you may consider doing it yourself.

As far as I know there was no clutch replacements in the first 54k miles
