I have a Cosworth drop-in filter in my 2013 FR-S and, unlike others previously posting in this thread, I definitely felt like my car revved more freely than with the OEM filter. Cosworth has a fitment for 2017 cars, so I highly recommend giving it a shot.

Aaand again. Why bring up pre-MY2017 car as a supportive argument, if it's already been mentioned that one of MY2017 OEM improvements over those older ones is stock airfilter of less pressure drop?

Understood and fair point - I sure hope the original poster reads this clarification, because it would be terrible if my misleading comments steered him wrong...

I have a '14 model and was planning to get a K&N drop in filter. But I read that it will run my engine run lean(er)?

https://www.reddit.com/r/ft86/commen...begin/dkzwzrf/

Can someone give me more insight on this? If he is right or not?

Blue Bird: Drop-in filter shouldn't affect AFR.
What were mentioned in your linked post as doing that, were intakes, that has such shape/size/MAF sensor placement, that allows passing more air while making MAF sensor by it's stock calibration misdetect as lesser air volume, thus when ECU tune adds in fuel amount matching those mis-readings, result is leaner air-to-fuel ratio. More power, but also less knock safe. Better doing proper ecu tuning, not hacking-around. It happens though, that after proper tuning for new bolt-ons, taking into account changes to MAF sensor readings, large share of these "hackish gains" by artificial leaning ARR are diminishing, making those parts to add way less power, by price/performancy. There are also such intakes kits, that had goal when designed, to not change stock MAF sensor readings (IIRC Grimspeed & TRD ones should be such), but of course they have less "gains" with stock tune, thus may look less competitive.
Changing filter to less pressure-drop/less resistive - leaves everything else stock. Airbox/inlet tube/MAF sensor placement. Even if air with everything rest being same can flow through easier, MAF sensor will detect that larger volume of air, and ECU tune will know to add more fuel in to reach targeted AFR.

It's a long shot, but does anyone have before/after dyno comparisons of stock 2017 mt car with stock filter vs. same car with any aftermarket filter? I know that 1-3 hp variations could be chalked up to a host of factors...just curious if anyone has any data

Best I have is stock 2017 BRZ and then with bolt-ons and OFT. You aren't going to see any change by just throwing in a filter. I think the Blitz is still the only one available for the 2017 MT cars.

I've done high flow drop in filters in a few cars and honestly one in the 2017 made absolutely no noticable difference compared to others. Wasn't surprised at all though considering the huge surface area increase over previous years for the stock filter.

Dropping in a K&N and putting nitrogen in the tires has been one of my first things I have done on my last 4 cars. Although I have not done the filter on my 17 yet. I have noticed little differences in response time of throttle. Even with stock exhaust with those 2 I have found an increase in mpg. I live in a severe weather climate and it helps to be able to clean my air filter rather than paying 50$ from the dealer for a new one. I like spending money wisely and only once. I’ve done this on several boxers with full exhaust and tunes turbo and non turbo. Although I have only tried fram air hog and k&n and the k&n was better. For me it’s something that is cheap and improves driveablity and mpg when done together but as for hp gains only it’s almost none of any. But really show me a drop in or bolt on that cost 50$ improves hp and trq with realistic results. There is none or everyone would have it. As for what One is better it’s up to your own opinion. Find one that you like and drive happy

I don’t get why we have dinky little air boxes any way on this car. The stock air box on the s2k was huge on top of that it was a massive cone filter. They should have adapted that or at least built off of it or improved it it could really help. O and no need for a stupid sound tube if you wanted louder sound you just take off the top cover to the air box now open ram intake

Ecu will adjust the changes, until you get tune and will see the benefits otherwise is a placebo effect

I had the HKS drop in filter until a few weeks back when I had the car tuned and replaced the HKS with a Takeda CAI. A tune and CAI is the way to go as the difference is amazing.
