Before I post the pictures I just wanna apologize for the crappy cellphone pics. Especially for the one showing inside the bellhousing. I could hold my phone still since I was holding it at a weird angle since the guy was standing in my way. But looking at the flywheel, I don't think it has anywhere near the amount of abuse/wear that can justify the clutch.

That clutch looks like it is off a Balkan farm vehicle.

Something's not right with this picture. Was this submerged ever?

Holy hell. In for the results of this. I can't say I've ever seen a clutch come out quite like that before.

I think that people may be seeing all the dust covered parts as rust. More likely just fine dust from the clutch facing.

Nothing's rusted. Like Tcoat said, its dust. A lot of it. I honestly believe for that amount of damage, especially inside the bellhousing, a spring must have gave up the ghost and scrapped everything else. I know its a clutch, but to me this all looks like a failure. This isn't normal.

I always ask for people with transmission/clutch problems--
1. Is this your first manual transmission car?
2. How much experience do you have?
3. Do you slip/feather the clutch in any other gear other than 1st? Do you rev match down shift? Do you hold the clutch pedal down at red lights?
Money shift?(missed gear or shifted to wrong gear at too high of a speed, ie 3rd gear going faster than 90+)
Did he rev-match downshift?
Which gear did he go for? and at what speed?
I've sold two cars where the new owner did not rev-match downshift and just force shifted from top gear to 3rd. Both blown clutches. One had a bent valves.

Not his first manual driven car.
He's had at least 6 years experience that I know of. Probably more.
He does rev match but that's about all I know. Well, that and he tried to down shift while on the highway and that's when the clutch let go. Don't know what gear he was in and going into.

literally just had this happen to me at the track this weekend. Identical to how you describe it happening to your friend. looks like its going to be a fight to get it replaced. I am hard on my vehicle but not hard enough to warrant the clutch to explode. haven't had it opened up yet but I'm assuming it will look the same. My car only has 22000kms on it (13750 miles) so this really should not be happening. Many people in the area have boosted fr-s and way more km/track time and their clutches are perfectly fine. Seems like the part fails on occasion for no reason.

So just for the record guys, he had to pay for it. They said it was going to be about $1400 to replace it then they dropped the price down to $1000. But in the end, the stealership won.

I'd say that's a fair deal, especially at $1000. Had a clutch replaced on my tC and the final price was over $2500.
