Appreciate the info. Most of the stuff I've read about this so far has been CHP related.

Heads up to my fellow Cali owners:

Just saw a video of a girl getting pulled over by non-CHP. She has to go to court, pay a $1000 fine, and was even told "get it fixed or don't drive"...

I'm hoping the OEM TRD exhaust isn't an issue.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure you can contest that ticket in court (and possibly avoid state ref) as long as your exhaust isn't louder than 95db and doesn't violate any other emissions/exhaust law. I.E. officer only assumed exhaust is modified. no checks/testing were done at the time of violation. (Not legal person but it may work? + the law allows us to use non-oem exhaust as long as it's within compliance last I checked)

OEM TRD exhaust should be fine as it's an oem part that does not state it is for off-road conditions only/is louder than 95db.

I thought I was gonna get pulled over today - sitting at a stop light waiting to turn right (3rd car in line). Cop pulls up in the lane next to me and leaves a lot of extra space in front of them, like they're deliberately staying behind me to check out my car. Obviously aftermarket tails (Spyder) and exhaust (tips of the Corsa are pretty visible), thought I was gonna see those lights turn on. Light turned green and I made my turn and they left me alone.

I would like to see someone's actual fine when they recieve it from the court.

As of last year the fine for equiptment defects is just under $200. This still falls under that as there is no new law on adequate mufflers, just that it is no longer correctable. A ticket can easily cost you $1000 if you get reffed after fees and stuff for all that, but they could always ref you for 27150 so thats nothing new unless Im missing something about all non-correctable vehicle issues needed a state ref inspection. The vid circulating everywhere is from last year before the change was even in effect so there is something off with it or the story.

They should be required check for mufflers and do the db test before being allowed to right a ticket just because "it doesnt look stock and i think its too loud"

If they are not doing their due diligence, I see it as harassment.

Possible civil suit against the ticketing officer?

I was thinking of keeping my stock exhaust (or Invidia q300s) with a catless uel header. Shouldn't be too loud right? Not much louder than all stock...

Just don't rev out the car getting moving.

When I drive normally from a red light, I know how to shift to get pops and some growl, but whenever I wind up next to a cop I just shift super early and at lower rpms and don't have problems at all.

Reposting what I posted to Sac86 FB:

Just talked to a traffic officer about the changes to the loud exhaust law:

He said the fine is $202 for loud exhaust. He did specifically mention that whistle tips are a $1100 fine (can change depending on the jurisdiction I assume).

The above fines are as of today in Yolo County, fines change periodically so what is mentioned today may be different later this year. Also fines differ based on county/city so these fines may not reflect your area.

As far as enforcement, nothing has really changed. To paraphrase, he said, if he can hear you before he sees you, it's usually excessive. He also mentioned that they go to training periodically specifically for spotting stock vs modified parts.

Just one officer's response though, so take it however you want. I trust the guy, been working with him and the department for 10 years. For the last 4 years I've had my exhaust, I've never had any issues, so I'm not worried.
Again, one officer, one jurisdiction.

Just for shits and giggles, we also talked a bit about loud music, since some people were bringing that up. There are similar laws that apply to that of which you can be fined and receive a point on your license.

To clarify @Pwolf's post further as I asked on Facebook, the $202 fine was under CVC 27150
