Motor Trend has always been biased towards American and German cars..rarely do I ever see their articles crowning a Japanese branded car as the winner of their comparisons.. C&D has always been more fair in my eyes.

Looking like the new Twins are a home run. I haven't seen any reviews that weren't good.

When you look at on the on paper numbers, features, the added practicality, and equivalent or superior performance metrics of the GTI or Veloster, the 86/BRZ can be a hard sell. FWD cars can be quite good, especially when based on volume models. For 7/10ths and below driving, you are better off with the GTI and Veloster, which for 90% of people will be more than enough. At 9/10ths, I still think it would be hard for many people to make the decision, even if the feel of RWD is better.

The reviews were just as good at the start of 2013 release.
The whole "it is too slow" and "the XXX is way better" didn't show up until later.
Let's remember that the second gen cars are an improvement but every other car has improved in the last 8 years as well. The Twins did not not get better in isolation so whatever was "faster", "more practical" or whatever then would still apply now.

There is always a "better" car depending on what you're willing to spend. For whats available NOW and not on the future the twins are tough to beat depending on your priorities.

Personally the 2nd gen cars have finally bested the s2000 in performance, the s2000 has always been a benchmark car for me. It's quicker than the s2000, ND miata, and the previous gen cars in a straight line, and there's not much left to compete against in this segment / price point, so I don't see reviewers complaining much about "power" going forward.

Plus we are approaching the end of ICE cars, so to me at least, the 2nd gen feels like a swan song to affordable, rwd, japanese sports cars of yesteryear as we approach the EV future whether we like it or not. For example using myself, I had to have this car, I grew up on 90's rwd shit boxes, the GR86/BRZ feel like the last of their kind. Maybe my reaction is misplaced, but I really think this gen will be a classic 10-15 years from now, maybe sooner depending how the EV / hybridization push continues.

I don't disagree but at the same time it is important to know that the exact same words were said about the first gen. It is also a "classic".

I would expect it to be quicker than a car that ended production 12 years ago, one that has not had an upgrade in 5 years and the version it is replacing. All that should be a given.

You wait. It won't take long for the internet to decide that it should be at least 250HP and a full second faster to be able to compete with minivans and the family sedan.
