They'd done 14 of them by the time I got my car back, and only one had come back with a serious issue, a transmission misalignment that was easily fixed. I'm only 2500 miles or so in, but I've been driving it like I stole it. No issues other than the broken aftermarket header, and that header had been welded like five times before, so it wasn't the dealer's fault. It's just not a panic issue. Avoid it if you want, sure. But trade in and buy another one? Meh.

I haven't kept track recently but the last I looked there were about 70 recall related failures. Let's take it to 100 to be up to date. Although even 1 failure is not acceptable the numbers are not as bad as they appear. We KNOW of about 1/2 a % of the cars had a post recall figure. Of those more were fixed by the dealer since they took responsibility than were denied. There are maybe 20 denied repairs on record here but they keep posting and posting so it looks way worse.
All that said the failure rate for the actual recall issue is several decimal points away from 1% so unless forced why would anybody ever want to risk it? I know I would not have been getting it done even before we saw the repair failures start to pop up. Recalls have no deadline so if my springs broke 5 years from now I would have just taken it in and said "fix it please".

Last I looked there were a lot that simply said under investigation so who knows if they ended up covered or not. I also noticed the spreadsheet isn’t getting updated anymore. But 100 seams about right. Still it seems the odds are much better to not do it at all vs a spring actually failing. Also, if one does fail it will most likely be catastrophic and get you a short block out of the deal.

This. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably follow this route, well except it saved me several hundred dollars because of the work I had "tacked on" that was done for cost of parts...so maybe I would have done it anyway. I'm a cheap bastard...

I did do some due diligence first through and made sure I was not the first one they had done, and that it was being done by a master mechanic at the shop.

If I had to have it done and had other things that I could save on I would indeed do the same you did.
Also if I had to get it done I would not have been one of the first guinea pigs but would have waited. Now would be the time to go in since they have experienced enough issues that it is high profile and you are more likely to have it done right. Too soon they didn't know (or care) and too late and they may have forgotten. It is sort of a three bears of auto repair situation.

Definitely far and away better to not do it at all. I wish I hadn't but my friend recommended that I do it incase the engine blew.
I don't think its accurate to say that most dealers take the blame and eat the cost however,I think it's far and away more common that the dealer's tell you to go kick rocks. Working on tracking down any receipts from when I purchased my oil/filters but I'm in the process of moving right now so things are kind of hectic. It seems more like a select few who consistently pushed the envelope got their situations taken care of.

No, its more common that they take care of it. But there is a significant enough number that dont where I don't feel comfortable doing it. But yes, many cases also take a bit of fighting too. You just dont always win.

Where are you guys seeing its more common the dealer takes care of it? On the NHTSA complaints, and even on the spreadsheet it looks like it's far and away not taken care of, I'm only seeing a few seldom scenarios where they aren't taken care of.

The spreadsheet isnt being updated. Some of those users have had it taken car of. Though more recently it seems like they are being denied so could just be the initial coverage I knew of has me bias the more I think about it.

Unfortunately they do. Our 06 Outback was recalled years ago for brake lines that rot and the fix was apparently slathering some grease on it to resist "outside elements". I didn't know that was the fix until I looked at it one day a few years later and the brake lines were weeping and badly dry rotted. I went in and asked if they could solve the problem and they told me that since the approved work was done and it was past the time limit they wouldn't touch it and that I should bring it to a brake specialist to have all of the brake lines replaced. The car has now been sitting in the driveway for almost 2 years because we can't sell it in that condition. I start it occasionally and drive it up and down our dead end street and it still runs beautifully, doesn't stop too well but otherwise I bet I could get it going without too much pain other than the nearly $2k it will cost to rebuild the brake system. Until then it sits...

That's the only reason I had it done on mine. There were a bunch of maintenance things I had been putting off due to the cost. They're only charging me for parts so it saved about $1200 in labor and a few things they found while the engine was apart they are covering at no additional cost that were ticking time bombs. I thought it ran pretty well, was getting the best mpg's of the cars life, but the tech said that was because things had gotten "loose" and the engine was spinning pretty freely but one of them would have wrecked it sooner rather than later. So all in all I think (hope?) it turns out to be a good thing that I've been without my car for almost 6 weeks now.

Well yes and no I guess

https://www.edmunds.com/car-safety/h...-recalled.html

While car recalls don't have an expiration date, they are only enforced for "reasonable periods," the agency says. Basically, a recall is over if a vehicle's manufacturer goes out of business, or if the parts needed to make the necessary repair are no longer being made.

Fun that a recall is made for "safety" reasons but as soon as they don't make parts anymore all is fine!

I would guess the bigger issue would be that the recall was already closed. They performed an inspection and the "repair". At that point you no longer have an open recall on your car.

We only get paid to do a recall once. If there is a "check and maybe replace" portion and you have a "check and do not replace" situation, you can't come back later for the actual repair.

Seems silly, but that's how it goes. Once the recall shows "closed" on the VIN no one can get paid to do it again.

Yeah it sucks because it trashed most of the brake lines in the back of the car when brake fluid spewed all over from one of the pinholes so it's a much bigger job than it would have been had they just replaced the flex lines originally. I assume that moisture then traveled through the system and ruined a bunch of other things so that orignal estimate is probably much higher now. I know that at least one of the calipers has seized so...

I'm about 5,000 miles after done my recall and also flashed to OFT Basetune for stock. Will be dropping my oil pan soon to install a turbo. I can take pictures of my screen filter if anyone is interested.

Following up on this. Managed to drop my oil pan this weekend, it was a PITA mainly because my exhaust bolt was seized and I was fighting it. Oil pan was pretty simple to take off, undo the 10mm bolts and pry off the sealant.

Not sure if it helps anyone but this is about 6k miles after recall.
