I never said everybody should all do it themselves if they don't have the capability/time/tools/etc but I don't foresee this really being a strain to get on the first shot. It's pretty much one of
the easier things on a car that can be fabricated at home with a couple purchases online. This isn't like making a new headlight or seat here. 90% of what we need is right off Amazon.
Maybe if you live in an apartment with no space/tools and have never even touched a wrench to an engine this might seem like easier to just drop the cash but I think coming up with a hood
strut kit here is like taunting a baker to make a chocolate chip cookie since it is so difficult.
How goes it? Make any progress?

Had to check out my $80 Ebay hood dampers for rust after reading this thread... ( now you can get them for $67.50 shipped... )

No rust after three years. They mount to existing holes and are still working great. The hood goes up farther than with the stock "stick". Which is nice when you are working under the hood.

They are plain black. Not fancy like the carbon fiber ones from Greddy.

I got the @GrimmSpeed struts for my car. Great quality, easy to install and I enjoy them every time I open the hood. And they have them tuned perfectly to make opening and closing the hood almost effortless. Easily the best $145 (including shipping) I've spent modifying the car.

Sorry, no progress at all. On my to do list, this is below claying the car which I only do every year. It's above swapping out for a V8 though but that might never happen.
I open the hood maybe a couple times a year at best. Sometimes just to look in there and see if the engine is still there. Oil is changed every year(@3.5-4k miles) and even that is done by the dealer to keep record for warranty.
This hood strut thing is so frivolous for my needs that even if a Grimmspeed/Greddy/etc. one was $50, I probably wouldn't have bought it since it's just not really something I need.
If I got bored and wanted something to tinker with, then I'd probably do it.

But the big question is have you taken it into orbit yet to test it's capabilities in zero gravity and/or terminal velocity at speeds and temperatures that could melt paint off the car?

Aaaand rational prices come back into orbit, so no need to design anything. The time that passed.....this is how important it was.

Still a big LOL at people who had paid 3-4X for the luxury of a hood strut. Anybody get that happy ending from Grimspeed lately?

My Redlines were like $90 and one of my favorite mods. I’ve done multiple engine mods with braces, oil coolers, a supercharger then adding injectors and Flex Fuel then doing clutch install and more. I’ve done headlight swaps and front end conversions. I have a Braille battery that I put on a trickle charge multiple times a week. It is a pleasure to easily bring the hood up and down, and it is great not to have the hood prop in the way when working under the hood. .

Everyone’s uses are different and everyone’s pockets are different. First to market products are always more expensive until knockoffs come, and some products don’t have the same build quality, longevity or reliability. Some don’t care to wait years for cheaper products to enter the market either.

Just read through this whole thing and I guess I'm bringing this dumpster fire of a thread back buuuuuuut

Is anyone running gas hood struts with a carbon fiber hood? I am afraid that it will fly open extremely fast and cause wear/tear on the mount holes. @GrimmSpeed any input on this by chance? (also, super random but my Evo 8 was the one you guys used for the master cylinder brake brace waaaay back in the day - super glad to see you guys are still around and crushing it!)

I don't think it would matter in the case of the FRS/BRZ/86. Unless you have a true dry carbon hood, most carbon hoods for the car are carbon over fiberglass. They tend to weigh just about the same weight as the stock aluminum hood.

As far as the bolt holes, I can't say

The stock hoods are super light, for sure. But the issue for me lies in the bolt holes holding up over flying open due to lighter hood and not being as strong of a material. (I'm getting the Seibon TS hood, ordered today)

I spent most of the day researching and got in contact with someone who advised me that it would be better to skip them and spend the money elsewhere, so that's what I am doing. Sucks, but the supercharger needs to breathe better and that's more important than some hood struts

Looked at the suppliers,,, $69 + $15 for shipping was the cheapest I saw for an FRS specific strut. I ended up with an Amazon set $25 shipped. 15" extended 9" compressed and has brackets and ball studs. I'll need to tweek the brackets though.
