Race Harness with stock seats
So I acquired a 4 Point schroth (Rallye cross) harness the other day from my next-season codriver.... I haven't really spent any time investigating how and where I want to install it to. Anyone else install one yet? How'd you do it?
I'm assuming I'll double up on the 3 point factory buckle bolt on the right side of the driver seat, find a bolt to use on the left side... I'm assuming there is probably something at the top of the rear shelf associated with the child seat restraint system I can connect on to?? This will be used for Stock class autocross... so there really aren't any specific rules for installation beyond "Seat belts (and harnesses if used) must be properly installed with attaching hardware, in good condition, secure, tight, and in compliance with Section 3.3.1." where section 3.3.1 says "3.3.1 Driver Restraints Seat lap belts are required in all cars, and must be installed in cars with passive restraint systems that do not include a lap belt. Installation and the use of shoulder belts or harnesses is strongly recommended, however non-factory upper body restraints may only be used in open cars, cars with targa-tops in the open position, or cars with T-tops in the open position when two conditions are met: A. The roll structure must meet either the requirements of Appendix C or the Club Racing General Competition Rules (GCR) 9.4. B. The top of the roll structure may not be below the top of the driver’s helmet when the driver is in the normal driving position." I know the guys at Essex were talking about offering a harness bar, this would probably be a back-up plan in the event I dont have the necessary attachment points on the rear deck. I'm not a big fan, even in autocross of setting up my restraint as a spine compressor. |

Good to hear from you Jeff! that is great news.
I'm looking forward to seeing the piece... what attachment points did you use for the bar? |

I followed this guy and did the Rallye 3, the Rallye 4 may not work since the rear seats are so close the angle of the straps would be extreme. Might be okay for autocross though. The 3 uses a single attachment point which can be attached to the seat belt reel near the C-pillar. It's at an angle to the seat but that's still an approved way to mount it. You can also mount it to the child seat anchor to make it straight but the belt points are stronger.
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15051 There are a few folks making harness bars now but most are more like rollbars... |

I was going to do the Rallye3 myself. Seems like the most straight forward and would work well for an autocrosser/daily driver car.

Our piece was not designed for quick removal or style. It is designed for effectiveness, function, stability, stiffness, and low weight.

Sooo I finally took a few minutes to look at the project and I found I actually have a Rallye 4 harness, not a rally cross, so that is nice.
I also took a look at the child seat retention latch on the shelf and bingo. Looks like a nice robust mounting point right in the correct spot, directly behind the driver, about shoulder height. I'll just pop out the child restraint bracket and double up the harness leads on the bolt with the lock washer. Done and Done. |

sorry for the huge photo, but whats the angle of the top of the seatback on the front seats to this point if we were to use a Rallye 4 and mount the rear connections in these neat slots. as opposed to using a rallye 3 and using the rear seatbelt retractor.
sorry my english is not best. |

it depends on your goals i think. if you just want more support thats feasible but if saftey is an issue i would advise against uing a harness with a stock seat.

You can use those attachment points, but I wouldnt do it for anything beyond autocross, that angle is well above the 10 degrees and in the event of a more serious event, can cause spinal compression concerns.
When I get around to my install, I'll post pictures of where I am attaching. |
