As the previous owner of three top trim Lancers (not Evos) I can assure you with 100% confidence this is ten times the car and you will not accidently "drift" unless you are really pushing it. Forget that it is RWD since most of what you hear about driving one is pure myth created by generations used to FWD.

With REAL snow tires (not "performance" ones or supposed All Season) these things are a tank in the snow. I have had to stop in deep snow and push AWD cars out of my way to get down some streets.
The main thing to grasp is how RWD will behave on throttle. The nannies do a pretty good job, but they are pretty intrusive. Gearing and wheel speed is important.

I find it harder to accidentally drive straight over the winter months. Mainly due to my inner 5 year old.
It's extremely predictable and makes you properly appreciate this chassis in the snow. Throttle, it goes sideways, off throttle is straightens out. Modulate to be somewhere between doing circles and going straight. Second gear is the most fun, the wheel speed seems about perfect for about any hooning you want to do while having a controllable wheel speed.

From a stop you almost have to let the rear end move around to get momentum. I can see that making some uneasy.
you can leave the nannies on but it kills so much wheel speed which you often need for low speeds in the city.

For maximum sideways on the lockstops

So you better have a bigass garage because cars are clearly intended for use with one and only one purpose each.
Exactly!

That's why I just bought a house with a 900 sq ft barn on a concrete slab, additional covered parking for four cars (or five if two of them are British sports cars or Japanese kei cars) and no HOA to bitch if I park cars on any of the three driveways or on the 1/2 acre out back.

I'm only up to four vehicles now, but I suspect I might do some shopping in the next year or two after I get the house and my well a little better fortified against the apocalypse. I'm really starting to want a '68-'70 AMX for driving in straight lines.

It is possible that I drove the very one pictured actually.

Didn't call it "drifting" and had no idea it would eventually be a real sport but you could break traction and side them around a corner with relative ease once you learned the trick.

If you drive the car at a reasonable speed for the road and don't mash the gas you won't have to worry about unexpected oversteer. For me, the beauty of the Twins is that they are controllable, allowing you to approach RWD driving dynamics at your own pace and at your comfort level.
If you drive a Twin like a regular car you won't need to worry about oversteering or drifting, but as you grow more confident, comfortable and interested it will allow you to explore that, unlike FWD or most AWD cars.

Yes the twins are amazing at giving you all the feedback you need. You really have to apply a lot of throttle in a corner to get oversteer, and if you leave traction control on it will keep you from spinning. Sport mode on the older cars and Track mode on the newer cars allows more slip before traction control kicks in, but it still saves you. The limited slip differential is great at keeping power down also. Plus there isn’t much torque there anyway.
Even with the stock all season tires there is plenty of grip, and if you get better tires there is even more grip.
So basically I think the twins are better at grip than drifting, in stock form anyway.

There is still plenty of grip in the FR-S, it’s just a little easier to provoke oversteer.
One thing I will mention, on my FR-S with TRD springs, it’s not very happy with mid corner bumps. A softer spring setup would be easier to control through a corner. It’s never scary, but something to be aware of. Applying throttle mid corner with a bumpy surface, something has to give.

That’s a good point, leaving traction control fully on will pretty much kill the throttle to prevent a spin. And that gets really old once you get a better feel for the car. Sport mode is usually good enough for me driving on the street.
