The tires on your Trans Am had taller sidewalls. The taller the sidewall, the narrower the recommended wheel width range will be for a given tire width. For a 245/40/17, the allowed wheel width range is typically 8 to 9.5 inches. So while it will technically "work" on an 8 inch wheel in the sense that it will physically mount, it's pinched down on narrowest wheel possible which is not optimum for handling. The same 245 would be much happier mounted on a 9 inch wheel, which is why it's such a common setup in STX.

245 width is within industry specs for installing on 17x8 wheels. And, I have been driving 245s since last three years on 17x8 wheels. Even Toyota service technicians said it is perfectly fine Plus, 245/40-17 is the closest tire size to stock diameter of 215/45-17. |

I would go 245 40 17. So many tire choices and there will always be an option if you run in to an emergency.

Measuring rim width for a 245/50-16 is 7.5", an inch narrower than 8.5" measuring rim for a 245/40-17. Rim width range for 245/50-16 is 7" to 8.5" Rim width range for 245/40-17 is 8" to 9.5" For a *handling* intensive fitment, you kinda want to be on the wide end of the rim width range. 17x8 is not a good wheel width for a 245/40-17 IMO. It is the narrowest allowed for that tire size. I'm running 245/40-17s on 9" wheels for street/track. |

Yeah, it's within spec, I agree it can be down to personal preference... I've never been a fan of the super-stretched look anyway... But for me my street wheels/tires are also sometimes track time-trial wheels/tires, so to optimize grip from a 245, a 9" or 9.5" is the way to go.
Street only, a bit of sidewall pooch isn't necessarily a bad thing and can act as more of a "rim-protector". I still prefer staying in the middle of the recommended rim width range but it's not a huge deal. Quote:

Car looks good. Running 245 on a 17x8 rim. No issues for me either. It's got a nice meaty look.

I'm running 245/40R17 RE71Rs on track on a 17x8 wheel, no issues.
Every tire is a little different though, so confirm the brand you're going with that 8.25 is in their acceptable range, this information is usually on tirerack under the specs for the different sizes, but generally speaking 235 or 245 should be fine on a 8.25 wheel. |

Eibach ProKit lower the car 1" and i highly doubt hes rubbing. If he is it might be on the fender since those tires a little taller than OEM specs. But like i said im pretty sure he is not rubbing because of that offset and and width. 17x8 +35 will give a flush fitment if you plan to lower your car 1"
