True! But my main reason was a job offer I wanted to accept. Housing cost made it easier to decide. Otherwise, we could have managed I am sure.

The whole thing is that people look at things such as housing prices out of context with the bigger picture. Generally the housing prices cab be directly linked to the local income levels. Sure there will be outliers but even in California the income levels have to be there for the prices to exist.
That $80,000 5 bedroom ranch in Buttfuck Arkansas may look really cheap until you find out the local average annual income is $25,000.
Hear it all the time here since the guys in Toronto say "Must be nice to be able to buy $200,000 homes". My only reply is "must be nice to earn triple what I do for the same job just because you work in Toronto".

That is right, my next job in MA paid 10% less and I was expecting that it was going to feel like 30% more.

Anyway, lessons learned. NY and MA are wonderful states too. And, I have my eye on Arizona or Nevada for retirement.

I remember back during the dot-com recession when my employer closed shop in Minnesota and offered to transfer a few of us to their HQ in Irvine... no cost-of-living adjustment. Haaaa hahahahahaha...

I was working in Silicon Valley at the time. The whole.area turned into a ghost town in a matter of months. So many companies went out of business or did massive layoffs. It was depressing. Although the rents went way down, house prices did not change much.
