The six speed TT cost 42K in 1993. If other car prices are any kind of comparison, the new supra will Cost north of $80,000.

MK5 is rumored to be about double the 86's MSRP, isn't really farfetched if it ends up being around that. At the very least I think it is safe to say the Supra won't be more expensive than the current Z4, otherwise the partnership to save costs was total bullshit.

..that is what I figured too but considering they have removed the backseats from the formula and are using a wheelbase shorter than the 86's, think the low curb weight is a real possibility. The Supra sounds like it is shaping up to be basically the 86 in its class, lower power but low curb weight..

Well the Z4 also had a shorter wheelbase than the 86 but weighed 3400 lbs as hardtop convertible and 3250 lbs prior when it was a soft top in the prior late 2000 generation. The Z3 was actually under 3000 lbs but that was a long time ago. Hopefully they can meet the Z3 curb weight or at least a Cayman's weight of 3000 lbs.

without nice interior materials, sound deadening and the convertible mechanical bits I could easily see a nice weight reduction happening. My bet is 3000 pounds but some rumors have pointed to sub 3K. 3000 pounds with a 400 HP engine could turn out to be pretty good though I'm not looking forward to the shortened wheelbase..

I had one each of the last two generations of the Supra. This new one just is not doing it for me. I will keep my Spyder and if I have to replace it then I would most likely get a used 2017 BRZ.

If it ends up being around that range I could see myself possibly wanting it especially if the price is right but I would still keep my 86.

I don't think it's going to have the performance or lineage for the name sake. Like, it probably needs to be faster than a camaro but it won't be.

Depending on the version of each I am not sure that it was faster than a Camaro back then either.
Agreed it is a Supra in name only. The marketing of the name is just too good for them to pass up.

GM designers can't draw a good looking Chevy to save their life. Even the Corvette looks childish and overdone.

No for two reasons,

1. I like the manual transmission, since going from auto to manual...I feel no desire to return to the point I want any future vehicle in my life to only have manuals. I've driven all the different auto types from standard auto, CVT and dual clutch...wasn't satisfied with any of them. All of them continuously keep getting better, but the lack of visceral feeling in any of them is enough for me to not buy. To me paddle shifters is the equivalent of playing Gran Turismo in manual mode, I don't find much joy in that...and actually play those games in auto.

2. Money. Zero chance this Supra is going to be inexpensive on multiple fronts. Its not going to be cheap to buy, its not going to be cheap to repair, its not going to be cheap to run. I liked the 86 in big part because it was very economical despite putting far more emphasis on fun. My fuel bills are shockingly stable compared to any of my colleagues who suffer greatly to any fuel price increase.

I'm not against getting a used Supra sometime in my life. Which gen I get does make a big difference, Mk II I'd probably keep stock as I'm nostalgic for the 5M-GE, weak in today's age but will rekindle some memories, I'm definitely a sucker for nostalgia. Mk III I'd likely toss the 7M to go 1JZ, which version I haven't thought that out as thoroughly and so something about making it handle good despite its weight. Mk IV...I'd find a TT and keep it stock as well, potentially minor handling improvements.

Not phased one bit by the new Supra's entry. We'll have to see how it truly is for me to even get excited about, but for me the 86 fit my criteria almost too perfectly. Anything I don't like about it I can change it relatively inexpensively...which is why I changed out the horn pretty quickly. Any quibbles I have with the interior, I can change out on my own leisure.

while that is true, we already have cheaper, slower cars. i dont see the draw to a more expensive slower car. which is a shame because im sure im not the only one who grew up lusting after the mkiv.
