Hey folks,
I recently dropped down an inch on Silvers coil overs. Absolute noob when it comes to suspension. Prior to being lowered I really enjoyed how connected I felt to the road when going around corners or even on the freeway getting up to 80mph. Now all of that has been seemingly lost. My ride is a bit twitchy when getting to higher speeds on the freeway. I feel like a paper weight when it is windy. Going into left hand turns the back end feels like it wants to jump out. The ABS will actually cut on on corners it didn't prior. I had this similar experience on a left hand turn on the freeway going 50mph that suprised me. Normally I would just roll right through no problem. Right hand turns are pretty similar experience as left hand turns. The car feels a lot looser than prior to the drop, not to mention the bumpier ride. Any suggestions on how to get back to that feeling of being planted to the road? I've had two allignments done and it just doesn't feel like things are correct since the ABS still comes on. Also will a different spring rate help with the bumpy ride? Thanks! |

What spring rates do you have now? Ride quality is mostly down to suspension travel, spring rates, and shock valving. I don't know much about Silvers coilovers, but if the valving isn't good, different spring rates will only help a little bit. Valving is reeeeeally important. - Andrew |

You bought adjustable damping coilovers, use the adjusters.

My FRS weighs about 2300 lbs (fully gutted, caged, no ac). And it's about ready to go on the road. Would I need to order custom valved/dampened/spring rate coilovers due to change in weight distribution and weight overall?

Depends on more conditions than that. Will the car see aero? Will it be on R-Comp tires or street tires? Etc etc. For me, going from autocross to track setup (including Aero and R7s) the only changes necessary was less bar and more bump. However I revalved my shocks during autocross to better suit my use. My opinion, run a standard shock offering with spring rates you want to run. Get an idea of what fits your driving style with what tracks you’re going to encounter and if you’re out of adjustment range then readdress with revalve changes. Most shock offerings can cover a wide range of conditions. Revalve should be there if/when you need it to narrow in on a specific range and make adjustments more precise Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Anything worth it's salt will have a damping adjustment that suits your needs (lighter car means stiffer effective wheel rate which means more damping necessary then the car's curb weight+suspension design would dictate, softer spring should help if damping doesn't go stiff enough provided the car is responsive enough as is) or can be revalved after you get some test time. |

If you are going to seriously track the car you should absolutely have your coilovers custom valved. I went from a pair of off the shelf units to a custom valved set and it made a huge difference in feel and performance. Also dont skimp on corner balancing.
How did you get the weight so low? 2300lbs!? Mine is gutted the same amount with a rollbar (not a full cage), no ac and weights 2475 with a half tank. There was a forum member named Anthony here for a while that went to crazy extremes to lose weight and he got to 2280 but that didn't have a cage. https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42284

Custom coilovers might be a good idea. Is this a track day car or a competition car? Happy to talk options with you if you like. - Andrew |

Still need to know how you got down to 2300 lbs with a cage! lol. I am out of things to remove and apparently my car is still fat.

That's always fun. We've put together suspension systems for a couple w2w cars including at least one for this chassis. I would recommend a custom set up for your car. Would need corner weights and info on aero, geometry changes, etc.
