Thicker oils don't protect better, that's true, but all oils have friction modifiers added, and the friction modifiers are very important, especially in manual transmissions.

I'm planning on doing Motylgear 75w90 Technosynthese for both.

Its rated as safe for yellow metals in the trans, and (per my understanding) since our LSDs do not utilize clutches, friction modifiers are not needed and regular gear oil is fine.

Also my buddy gets tons of this stuff for free.

I used that stuff in my 2010 WRX and it worked great. Cleaned up the shifting a whole bunch and made it so I could actually get the car in gear in the cold. And it removed almost all of the "binding" I would sometimes feel going from second to third.

motul gear 300 for both. I know a few shops that use it for both. I emailed motul and they replied saying it was safe for use in our transmission with yellow metals.
