Trade In Question
Note: You can skip my play by play to the question below and really not miss much.
So I've been trying to work with my local dealership as I've mentioned in a few places around these forums. My family has purchased somewhere around 7-8 Toyotas from them. Mostly from one guy that is, unfortunately, no longer there. Last week after shopping and researching and researching and planning I finally paid them a visit. THIS THREAD pretty much explains my current situation. Except that they've been unsuccessful in locating an Asphalt 6MT locally and said they'll need to request one from port. The sales guy seemed confident when he last emailed me over 48 hours ago. I responded to him asking for a realistic ETA. I had also intended to call him that day anyway to try and haggle a little on my trade in offer so I gave them a new figure for my trade and asked them to tell me what they can do about hitting it. Since then I've not heard a word so I started shopping around to see if I can obtain my new car sooner elsewhere. I'm not giving up on them just yet as the guy could have been off or unable to respond in two days but I want to maximize my odds. Now I've been talking to two Subie dealerships and one other Toyota dealership. The first Subie dealership sold the car I was inquiring about so that's done. The second looked promising but their internet price and the price they quoted me don't match. They claim the vehicle is in their showroom and has every option under the sun so it's nearly $30k. I told them that I don't need several of the options and recalculated MSRP based on the ones I'd take grudgingly. They were still higher by about 2k so I said if they could make that the OTD price we can start working on finalizing everything. Waiting to hear back on that. Then I hit Scion's site and opened the web page for every Scion dealership in a 100 mile radius. I closed the ones that didn't have their new inventory posted online (how stupid of them) and searched through the rest. I hit the jackpot 3 hours away and had a quick email exchange with their internet manager. Offered to put down a deposit but hit him with the unfortunate problem of my trade. At 3 hours drive away I am very wary of driving out there only to be unable to reach an agreement on my trade. He understood and asked me for the details of my current vehicle which I sent him and am awaiting a reply. My question: The dealership is 3 hours away. I'm trying to work the details of the deal out ahead of time but it includes a trade. I'm asking for a preliminary offer based on the info I provide them with the understanding that they'll need to see the vehicle before it can be final. I'm down to my last 2-3 payments on the Jeep at the end of a 72 month (NEVER again.. financing the FR-S for 48 max) term but I have a cosigner. The stealership (hated them and never went back) that sold me my Jeep put my cosigner down as primary in the very beginning but the vehicle's been registered to me since. Will I need my cosigner with me to trade in my Jeep since there's like $1k left on the loan? This is problematic because it's my elderly grandmother. Does anyone know any way around this? Unfortunately, paying off the last $1k and waiting for the title is not an option at the moment.

If your grandmother is listed as the primary on the vehicle that you are trading in, then I believe she has to be present.
Alternatively, you might be able to have a power of attorney drafted that allows you to act on her behalf to trade the car in which means she wouldn't have to make the trip. Good luck! |

The lien on the vehicle might make things a bit wonky, but otherwise I'm doing the exact same thing right now.
Go to your local tax collector's office and talk to them about it, I went over lunch today and I was handed a power of attorney form, a bill of sale form, a checklist, and I was told I will need to have the title in-hand. All you need to do after that is have your grandmother fill in the forms so you can be added to the title (make sure it says "OR" between the names!) and you're done. After turning in the forms, the tax collector will hand you the updated title on the spot. |
