Yup. They're like a bottle rocket. There are only three settings: off, on, and burned out. Even liquid fuel rockets rarely have much throttle range (usually like 95%-100%). A big reason that SpaceX's rockets are so cool is because they can throttle the engines across a large range (40-100%), which is why they're able to balance the thrust perfectly for landings.

SRBs are just lit or unlit, and once you light them you can't shut them off. (There are a few rare exceptions where they can be extinguished early, but not the Space Shuttle's SRBs and I don't think any of those rocket motors are used in manned flight either.) In any case, it's completely on/off and they don't re-light.

In-car Alpha testing starting today. Bench and flow testing has shown very positive results. Over 80% of the pre-filter needs to be covered before it even starts to affect the flow. Significantly more filter surface area than OEM.

We'll be looking for Beta testers in the coming weeks and are shooting for a $49 price target if testing and feedback is positive.

Wasn't a good way to show flow, so I just took this pic to give a visual. This sink flows ~3 gal/min. These engines flow ~2 gal/min at maximum RPM.

I would likely be interested in beta testing. Getting my pickup and pan inspected soon anyway, in preps for the track season. I’ll talk to my local shop and see what they think.

Not looking to beta test, but will be interested once the pan spacer, replacement pan or whatever comes out so I hopefully only have to deal with it once.

Have been testing and riding the mule hard for almost 3 weeks, and it's been uneventful. Plan to drop the pan at 3K mile OCI and see how things looks. We did oil bench testing at over 300° so I don't expect anything exciting, but testing is mandatory.

Now is the time, if you'd like an opportunity as a Beta tester, please shoot us a PM. We are looking for those that rack up a lot of miles, track use, and uses the entire rev range more than regularly

I have a feeling that similar to the EJ25 motor issues in which Subaru ultimately covered the cost of future repairs or past repairs related to the issue, Toyota/ Subaru will end up ding the same thing with FA24 motors down the line. I'm keeping receipts of any preventative repairs related to RTV build up that I will incur so that when the time comes they can be presented to Toyota/ Subaru for reimbursement.

The above one is a hard one to watch because as the comments are saying, he's not beating on the car. It's certainly more of a novice, first track day type of experience going on, not time trials or anything.

He does note he did a fresh oil change with 5w-30 the day prior to this. It's really unknown until an engine teardown is done to confirm if there's a crap ton of silicone clogging the pickup, but I wouldn't completely rule out the possibility the oil change was underfilled.

I'm not attacking the owner, but I've seen a lot of people think they're all good to go, like putting on a new filter, filling up to the "full" dot, and calling it day. As much as I autocross, I prime the system, start the car, drive it around, and come back to top up whatever might be needed. A lot of times people are running their cars a quarter of a quart under that full mark, or more. Which might be ok for the street, but then toss some good G's on the track at it and you could put yourself at risk.

But who knows. All just speculation. Can't simply just blame it on RTV and Toyota/Subaru and call it a day. There are many pickups out there with a good bit in/on them and limited failures.

Agreed. Drive article mentioned that the dealer found a large hole in the top of the engine block. That is not the same type of failure we have seen with the RTV issue. And would also like to note that just because the engine failed at the track, doesn't mean the cause of the failure was expereinced at the track as well. Things like over-revs that cause engine failures could've happened several hundred (or thousand) miles back...and the part just happened to finally let go at the track.

That's exactly what would happen on any spun bearing.

And that's the rub.

I'm not saying this is necessarily the case, but it's possible that had the engine been shut down right away it would have been a warranty issue. If there's something wrong and you keep driving you can exceed the limits of your warranty.

Though what you say makes perfect sense to do, I don't know that it should exceed the limits of your warranty. The fact that there IS a problem that then MAY or MAY NOT lead to your dead engine shortly after, is where the warranty should have no such limit.

Here's what you're saying in a different example: My radio is having an issue, so it should be covered under warranty. I kept using it anyway, regardless of the issue, and it completely stopped working now, so it therefore exceeded the limits of the warranty.

Doesn't make sense. Sure, I agree 100% that he may have saved his engine by shutting off the vehicle ASAP. But warranty wise, whatever the problem was, it existed regardless.
