Regrets on Automatic?

Sometimes I regret it. Mainly just seeing some of my friends with manuals. But like @Ernest72 said, it’s great to just jump in, throw it in D, and not have to think about it. Traffic is also stupid here so that helps. I use the paddles quite a bit too. I’m sure the manuals are super fun and I’ll get one one day.

Yep, manuals are for weekend cars. Plus we get 33mpg so that’s great for my 78 mile round trip commute. And if you want fun the paddles are there.

There are always threads asking if people regret getting an auto, but never one asking if someone regrets the manual. Just sayin.

Throw it in D and not have to think about it? Having to think about it goes away. I have to think about driving autos, telling myself to keep my left foot on the footrest and not to press the clutch.

I never understood the traffic argument. In an auto you have to constantly hold the brake, same thing as holding the clutch. you can put either in neutral and ebrake for extended standstills.

Shouldnt have any regrets for getting an auto, the one in the twins respond pretty well.

that said, its still like 10x more boring than stick...and paddle shifting doesnt feel the same, nor does it make up for the fun factor a stick shift provides.

For my driving it is about 0x more boring. Frankly, after hundreds of thousands of miles of driving both, MT is just as automatic as AT is. I don't really think much about either.

Does anyone regret picking blue as their favorite color? Pretty much the same thing.

Plus your brain will look for reasons to justify your purchase. Takes a real effort to be objective. Bias can even creep into controlled studies, imagine bias when emotions and feelings are involved.

Ask people who have injured knees or arthritis and they will tell you that AT is absolutely easier than MT. This has been confirmed by even the strongest supporters of MT. So I think we can say that AT is easier for commuting and the MT is more engaging and therefore potentially more fun.

Exactly this, I have been dealing with arthritis in my left knee for 20+ years, I'm only 40 now, so I have days where it hurts to walk. I couldn't even think of having to hold a pedal down to get home and to work.

I have said this a few hundred times now but will again.
If you find driving MT to be more exciting during regular daily driving then it is just because it is new or different to you or you are a hazard on the public roads.
Anybody driving MT for a long time (in my case 47 years) you no longer put any more thought into shifting than you do steering or braking. It is not more "engaging" when you don't even realize you are doing it. My car may as well be an AT for all the thought or even awareness I put into shifting.
If you have to think about each shift you are probably doing it wrong anyway!

..and I'm still 10000 x happier with my manual than when I had my auto 86..

Well if our robots at work are any indication it is really going to suck when your legs either randomly stop moving or just start spinning and won't stop for no apparent reason.
