I expected to catch heat, seeing as "tcoat" is a fixture here. I've never been much for pandering favor, and will comment if I feel I have something of value to ad...regardless of fanboys, insults or the like

Yes, if the refresh is a good one then the value will drop that is perfectly normal. If it is not the value will stay or go up. The major factor pushing used car value is supply and demand not what the badge says. If the refresh rocks and everybody trades in then we will see a drop. That is normal as well. All this remains to be seen once the refresh is out and to automatically figure it will be a drop is not completely accurate.

The problem here is that you're not differentiating the parent company from tier branding and consumer perception. If brand wasn't important, manufacturers wouldn't use brand tiering for product differentiation (Nissan/Infinity, Toyota/Scion/Lexus). You can search for any of the above phrases and find further explanation. I've done what I can...

So adding to the "name" branding problem for me was also the marketing strategy for the brand.

What if there had been a Toyota-badged FRS with available Limited features? Ahh....that would've required more thought and study. Don't know for sure, but I liked the idea of buying the car from the actual manufacturer and that probably would have kept me on the BRZ. That and the WRB color - which is still the Best Ever!
...a perfect example of individual perception of value.

One says value on used will drop because Scion
Other says no it will drop/stay same/increase based on the merits of the new model
One says that Toyota is good and Scion is bad
Other says they are the same thing
One says he is highly intelligent and other is to dumb to know (paraphrased)
Other gives up on circular argument

I don't think you're giving enough credit to the consumer/buyer. Sure the average person buying a car, brand tiering as you put it, may play a very important role in the buying process. But for car enthusiast and the niche market that the gt86/brz platform is brand tiering does not play into the buying process much mainly because most buyers know the 3 variants of the car and that differences are minimal. Especially when you are talking about scion vs toyota if you were comparing scion vs subaru than yea the brands matter alot more.

Yes, but we're not just talking about badges in general. For example, there are very real differences in Toyotas tiered brands. I have owned Scion, Toyota and Lexus products. There are very real differences in the quality and performance of these brands. In acknowledging perceived value as individual, I give all the credit to the consumer/buyer in that regard. Whether a given consumer is well informed is another matter. In the case of the "twins", perceived value may be moreso about the emotive element a buyer associates with a brand than actual physical differences in the machines-completely individual perception. In fact, no two buyers have had the same experiences and exposures, just as no two manufacturers, or tiered brands, are likely to tie on a given performance index.

That's like saying "my Ford F-150 handles way worse than my McLaren MP4-12C".
