Minneapolis and front plates

I'm going to be driving around the MSP area for a couple of weeks later this month and would like to know how strict the police are about front plates. i'd rather not wear one if i do not have to, but would rather not get a ticket.

(magnetic mount, so it is easy on/off)

I've had mine off for a good month now, and haven't been bothered

Since you're from out of state I seriously doubt they would bother. It also depends on what part of the Twin Cities you're in. Some of the police in the suburbs don't have enough to do so the go looking for reasons to pull people over.

Quite unlikely that you will get stopped for this. From what I understand, it is not considered a moving violation, but "failure to display," so even if you get a ticket it shouldn't affect your insurance. If you're in downtown Minneapolis, avoid the area around the courthouse on weekdays. LOTS of police that feel they need to enforce everything because of the environment (got stopped there once years ago but successfully argued that the license plate frame that covered the tabs was necessary to hold on the plate).

I have South Dakota plates and go into the Minneapolis area a lot. Never been bothered. I've had cops pull a u turn after seeing I don't have a front plate then do nothing once they notice I'm from out of state.

I have been pulled over 3 times in the last four years for no front plate, twice on the highway by a state trooper and once on a local road in Minnetonka. The first two were in my old car (2005 GTO).

In every case I was not driving odd or anything like that. I was pulled over just for not having the plate.

I never got a ticket for it but have decided it is not worth the hassle to go without.

I'll chime in on this since I drive frequently to MN to see my family. I don't usually have any issues with MN law enforcement (being out of state). As long as you are following the law and they see your out of state plates you should be fine. With that said I usually maintain less than 8 over the speed limit since lot's of MN'er like to speed (better than Omaha, NE drivers!).

I've tested this theory of no front plate and doing 5 over with state troopers near the rest stop on the Iowa boarder. For Minneapolis/St. Paul police I was driving on 35E south of 90 (when the speed limit is 45mph) last weekend at 11pm at night and had a cop trail me for a mile or two. I think I was going 50mph but I slowed down and switched lanes. He ended up passing probably laughing at my NE plates lol. So far no issues.

I always go 65 mph on a 55mph speed limit. I was told by a Sheriff cop on a briefing that your maximum speed limit on a 55 mph zone can be 65 mph, but if you go anywhere over then youre out of luck. I tried doing a search online about it but came up with nothing. Hopefully he was no bs or else

Cops in Woodbury and downtown MSP will pull you over for no front plate, this is speaking from experiences.
