lol ya that is a coincidence. Once you start messing with Creo, you'll never go back to Pro/E. |

My job has a limited amount of SolidWorks seats. I have one of them and use it every day. Everyone is getting Inventor soon along with the whole 2014 AutoCAD. I like Solidworks better but for a hobby it is SO much easier to attain a AutoCad licence.

Pro/E is dead. Creo is the new program, they folded the two together. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creo_Elements/Pro |

I've mostly used Solidworks, its actually pretty versatile depending on what packages you put in it like Cosmos (FEA simulations). Catia and Solidworks are both made by Dassault Systems and like what was said earlier you could consider Catia to be on a larger scale such as modeling your entire production line. Boeing has built entire planes down to very smallest bolt and rivet in Catia.

I did a bit of AutoCAD in high school.. Now I just manage it.
The company I work for uses entirely Autodesk stuff now. They had Pro/E and BricsCAD too in the past. I couldn't really tell you how to use it anymore, but I'm in the middle of setting up a 2014 Inventor Suite network deployment so I can upgrade all of the machines. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to like Windows Server 2003 very much. :/ |

As just a hobbiest I use RhinoCAD. It's a a really good package that's well supported, with tons of 3rd party plugins for more advanced functions, and still afforadable (not cheap) to someone who is buying it themselves.
Plus for me it's a little more intuitive for my style of designing.

For all the Pro/E users getting ready to make the jump to Creo 2.0 it is worlds better. I find it more similar to Solid Works and Catia now. I've been using Creo 2.0 for a solid year now. I started my career with a contracting engineering firm and they used everything so I have used AutoCad, Inventor, Solid Edge, Solid Works, Catia, UG Version 18 through NX 7.5 and Pro E Wildfire 2.0 through Creo 2.0. I changed jobs mid last year and my new company uses Wildfire 4.0 minus myself and a few other guys (bathing). But if all goes well with our data migration we will be Creo 2.0 company wide next Wednesday.

Not to revive a seemingly dead thread but I work in the aerospace industryand we work solely in Catia. It is great program when it decides that it is willingto cooperate. I can’t speak from any ProE experience but in reference to SolidWorksit shares many similar qualities but offers a lot more plugin specific analysistools. At my company we create everything from the tiny hardware used inproduction to full aircraft interior mockups. All of our tooling used to createproduction components are created in Catia as well.
A little more off topic but I was doing a bit of searching online and wasunable to come up with a whole lot of result as to a good CAD model of theFRS/BRZ. There are a few for sale but they seem built more for rendering andmay not offer some of the more parametric geometry that I would be moreconfident in using. I would like to explore a bit with some exterior componentsfor this car like diffusers and body panels but I would like to know theaccuracy and editing qualities of some of the models for purchase. Nothing isworse than paying for a 3D model that has no solid foundation of how pieceswere generated. Again I am not looking for something handed to me for free (although I am not opposed to that idea ) I just wanted to see if someone knows of arespectable model for download/ purchase. By respectable I mean one that hasbeen used before to create 1:1 components that require minimal modificationafter created. |

i think the best method would be to model different parts of your own car and build off of that as opposed to buying a pre-made model. At least if you're an engineer you will know what is and isn't important in designing new parts, whereas someone selling a model might only be concerned with appearance rather than function.

It would be nice to have access to a 3D scanner and just generate some parts that way. Wishful thinking I suppose. |

My shop uses Solidworks, and some of the things baffle me. But that could be the way the network is setup, and the users. One of our designers released a part missing a bunch of holes, later told us that it was because the Hole Wizard refused to load a bunch of times, so set it aside, then released it later forgetting that the holes weren't there. Naturally, they were not simple to drill on the finished weldments on the machine...
*Edited out small phone screen-related problem*
