Prime example of not running winter tires during the winter. Drive safe everyone.

I'm trying to survive until the spring so I can buy a new set of nice wheels with summer tires and then in the following fall, buy some snows for my stockers. I have been using PTO days when it's snowing or supposed to snow (like today) in fear of wrecking my car. My commute to work is 46 miles (~50 minutes). The stock tires on this car are garbage, average at best even when it's dry.

Some of you sound like you "never had problems" in the winter with stock tires but trust you will, not that I want you to wreck your cars but you will.

It's not so much about knowing the limits of your car or not because, what if someone in front of you and behind you had less grip than you and say, lost a traction. Do you think with the stock tires you can avoid possible accidents? Nope.

When the deer jumps at you (Russian drunken deer ) on a highway do you think you can suddenly change a lane? Nope.

To be honest with you all, I never had a set of winter tires in my life before.
As a first RWD car I thought I'd give a shot and went on to get me a set of Blizzak WS70s.

I can tell you from my own experience that WS70 really gives you that confidence even in really bad weather.

Our cars are light so it's quite easy to slide sideways when the roads are slippery and WS70 is very predictable and grips quite fast even after it slides (if it ever slides that is).

I don't really understand a logic behind people who are buying "sport winter tires" because if the primary reason for buying a set of dedicated winter tires is to prepare for the worst, why waste money on a set of "winter tires" that performs less than the actual, legit winter-winter tires like WS70s or if you go a bit cheaper General Altimax?

Of course, it never snows everyday and some of you guys might find winter sports tire better with quieter road noise and better dry road traction and behavior.

But I think having a set of dedicated summer tires is good enough to keep me entertained throughout the year.

I wouldn't want to risk any bit against the mother nature, I can always enjoy slides and all that in summer. Come winter I'm a turtle with mad grip and traction.

Anyways hope you all have a safe trips to wherever you all need to get to.

Don't cheap out on winter tires.

just got home from driving in this storm, took me 4 hrs to get somewhere that usually takes me 25 mins. I am stock tires and today was the day that i decided to get rid of em. They have held up in previous snow storms but today they were tested and failed. I was sliding every which direction, thank God i know how to straighten out my car and control my throttle. stock will be changed out asap.. save driving out there guys

I'm glad you made home safe and sound.
I had quite a trouble even with Blizzak WS70 (not "sports" winter tires) which is the best snow+ice tires on earth, and i still from time to slid just a little to give me a feeling that this tire was worth every penny. lol

Now I can't imagine driving my brz with stock tires........ I don't think I'll be confident enough to drive a car today.

And on the way home (at around 3 o'clock), the road was absolutely terrible with so much unplowed snow-covered road (46) and majority of cars were going really slow @ something like 15-20 mph.

I was driving mine at 35 mph because I felt if I went any faster I'd slide sideways

If you're gonna get a set of winter tires, get the blizzak WS70. Don't get "sports" winter tires- remember you're buying a set of winter tires to be safe.. not to be sporty on the road lol

I have relatively new Blizzak LM-60's here and the commute home tonight was still a disaster. Everything was fine until cars started slowing down on a hilly section of the Sawmill Parkway. Basically went 1/4 mile uphill going 2mph sideways and counter-steering the entire way. First time I've felt uncomfortable driving this car in the winter.

I made it through last winter with a set of Blizzak LM-22s, but with 45 min each way with hills everywhere, I put the snows back on my Legacy GT and driving that. Just not worth the risk and stress of getting stuck on a hill.


If you must, go with snow tires and weight in the back. Go with the more aggressive treads, not the sport winter ones in my opinion.

stockers really shouldn't be used unless you leave in a warm climate.

however my issue now ISNT tires, or the car its simple ground clearance. i'm not slammed but i am on coilovers, with weather like today its just smarter to stay home or take another car. i'd like to keep my bumper in one piece.

STOCK tires suck in the snow. And no it's not a matter of driver skill. I drove home from work in sicklerville to fort Dix at around 7pm and for the most part it was OK I was sideways a few times on the 295 but nothing to bad.I saw a lot of other cars that were spun out or spinning out the only place I got stuck was on a small hill on base that was at a stop sign nothing about 5 strands of 550 cord per tire with knots tied in it Couldent fix. If I was gonna be in New Jersey for another winter I would definitely get a set of dedicated snow tires. But I will be going back to sunny Southern California in ten months

Can you take me with you when you go back to SoCal?
Personally never been to SoCal but I don't mind warm temperature... and dry weather
