To resolve both issues you need to have root (superuser) rights. In ES File Manager, select menu, and select 'Root Explorer' which is located under the 'Tools' section. At this stage ES Explorer will be given superuser rights. From the pop-up menu select 'Mount R/W' and click on the RW button next to '/system'. Just remember to switch it back to RO after you finish tinkering. (RO = Read Only, RW = Read/Write)

Now copy the logos from your USB stick to the /system/etc/logo directory (ie, keep on clicking on the up icon until it no longer changes, and then click on 'system', then 'etc', andd finally 'logo').

While the ES File Manager app has root rights, you should also be able to see the contents of /data now (that's one mistake I did make - it turns out you do need root on this device to gain access to this directory). Copy bootanimation.zip to the 'local' directory which should now be visible in the directory.

That's the general 'point-your-nose-in-the-right-direction' instructions. Let me know if that still has your head spinning and I'll sit down and write up a 'push-this-button-now' level guide.

PS, in case people want to copy to/from other devices:
  • USB = /sdcard/udisk
  • MicroSD = /sdcard/extsd

It is confusing that both of these directories are under the /sdcard directory. The /sdcard directory was historically the main storage area and just happened to be on a SD Card on initial Android devices. This not necessarily the case on newer devices, but the convention of calling the main storage area /sdcard has stuck.
You really are da man @GreenPants.

Followed those instructions and now have all the boot logos to choose from and have the great car (as mine is grey) animation on startup.

Also have carscope for gauges, RaceChrono for lap timing and TomTom GPS installed and working.

It's perfect! Well, almost - I have ordered a reversing camera and might need my mate @Tech to help me wire that in!

Here is a system.img (mirror) (needs to be un-zipped) file to replace the equivalent file from Hal9k's collection (see first post in this thread). I've made some additional tweaks:
  • Radio resources tweaked - now with RED background.
  • Google Maps API installed by default
  • Custom logos from this thread included
  • Superuser replaced with SuperSU (I was having some issues with Superuser, while trying to get PPP Widget working)

It may not be worth it for folks that have already tweaked everything 'just right' - unless, like me, the blue radio screen just rubs you the wrong way.

To install, reflash your device with the same instructions at the start of the thread - just replace the system.img file with this one. You'll have to re-install/re-tweak everything else afterwards though (although some apps remember their settings).

Damn you! I want but don't want to risk going through the whole thing again.

Is there a way to get the orange radio background without doing the entire reflash again?

Possibly, but it would make the instructions to install the Google Map API framework look like a walk in the park.

There is a certain Zen-like quality to 'Hold down two buttons while powering on' that can't be beat.

System.img is actually a file containing a file system. I'm contemplating making some more adjustments to the image, such as adding the generic bootanimation.zip by default, but I am wary of leaving too little free space (currently only ~12MB out of 128MB) or causing other potential issues in the OS.

I do have the day off today for the school holidays @GreenPants. If I can keep them occupied for part of the day I'll get this done!

With the lower memory you mentioned ~12 out of 128MB is there any issues using the boot animation later or is that simply the memory it uses on installation?

I believe that the unit has about 8GB of storage in total. This data gets partitioned into different sections for different uses. For example:

/cache = 50MB (too small for downloading large apps)
/system = 128MB (contents of system.img)
/sdcard/udisk = whatever you've plugged in via USB
/sdcard/extsd = whatever you've plugged in via MicroSD

Other locations use different sections. When you copy the bootanimation.zip file into /data/local, you are actually placing it in an alternate location - on a section with much more space. The 'normal' location for Android to find bootanimation.zip is somewhere else on /system, where things are a little more cramped.

Generally /system is a location that folks shouldn't be touching/changing - which is why superuser rights are required to access it. AFAIK, there is no trouble running /system in an almost-full state. The only time where it may be an issue is if the vendor provides a formal update - but I don't really see that happening, and if they do it will probably be in the form of a system.img that will just blow away the existing stuff anyway.

Having said that though, if the /system partition was full, then it becomes increasingly difficult for users like us to simply add a file here or there, so it's always a good idea to leave a little room for tinkerers. In our case, I could look at deleting some of the unused logos to free up space again if I think things are getting a bit tight.

@GreenPants, I download file and I find very slowly, I save it on my dropbox for all. So is there an adding link for all "pro-future" with no band limitations. Let me know if you are "cooking" other system images, I offer free my space.
Alternative download : https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/60477179/system.img

Thanks @Trap63 - downloading now and gonna give the new root a go.

I've saved all of the various files into different directories on one USS stick now incl root files and the other logo and boot animation files so I have them all in one place instead of five different USB sticks and an SD card! So, I only have one USB and one micro SD card and it has all I need on it.

Thanks @GreenPants and @Trap63

Just a reminder that you have to root/update from microSDHC - USB doesn't work. I keep on stumbling into that gotcha.

Yep, thanks for that - just handy to have all the required files on one USB. I'll put it away in my "car cupboard" with the micro SD so if anything goes wrong in the future...

@GreenPants - did the root again with your new files and got Racechrono to reinstall straight away so your new system file works (as you already knew but nothing like more people testing it!). Also got the TRD startup logo and orange car boot animation going. Radio background is now red/orange - yay!

Couple of questions if you have time - PRETTY PLEASE. I have a music folder appear in the middle of the home screen now (see image below). How do I get rid of that? I generally just have the music open automatically when my USB is connected so don't need that extra bit?

And, how can I get the "86" piston logo as my wallpaper like you do?

pic of music folder on how page I'd like gone please

a) Tap and hold the widget. When selected, drag to the trash can that appears. To reinstall (or any widget for that matter), click and hold on an empty area of the screen and select from menu.
b) Easiest way - copy image to USB stick. Start Gallery and browse to image. Go into menu and 'Set As'. Select area of image you want.

The wallpaper is pretty easy to find. Do a google image search for 'toyota 86 emblem'. Should be the first couple that pop up. (I actually grabbed mine from another post somewhere in this forum -don't remember exactly where though).

PS - I thought you were going for the grey animation?
