coming from a miata, I can say that this motor does not rev as quickly as my BP4W-T, nothing a lighter rotating assembly cant fix, though. Its far smoother revving than my inline4 though, for obvious reasons.

God I hope not. Our GenCoupe had it and it was annoying as hell.

I'm no expert heal-toe shifter, but I definitely like the revs to drop quickly so that I can nearly match revs when I select the next gear. Having a light flywheel allows you to shfit quick quickly and not have to wait for revs to drop or give it a ton of clutch to assist the process.
Heal-toe is for down shifting so you blip the throttle to get the revs up to match when down shifting.

Yes, sorry.. I mis-spoke.. I wasn't implying that heal-toe had to do with upshifting.. I was trying to give a disclaimer that I am not a particularly skilled clutch operator... but I still find it noticable and annoying when the revs don't drop quickly enough.

I know some people who can rev match upshifts and downshifts to the point where they can shift without the clutch. I'm certainly not that kind of driver.

So you drove the BRZ? If so how smooth was the engine in comparison to other smooth engines? I hate the rough feeling of I4 engines so I hope its not anywhere close to it.

oh my mistake, thought this was the FRS forum. I actually drove an FRS (first86 and all that) -- but assuming the car's ECU and engine are identical...

The engine was the smoothest I have ever driven outside of a rotary. Nothing OEM will really ever be as smooth and as quick revving as a rotary, but this boxer came fairly close. However, Ive never driven any other boxers so I dont know if it being smooth like that is typical.

I know the comparison is a bit worthless since Ive never driven an ej22, ej25, or other boxer vehicle, but thats my 2 cents.

I'm in the same position as you, sort of. I have experienced vehicles with Subaru boxers in them but one engine was on the back of a gyroplane and the other was on the nose of an airplane.

Both were fantastic!

Supposedly the 2.0 Boxer engine in the FRS\BRZ is smooth like glass. No roughness at all. Smooth all the way to fuel cutoff.

From what I hear, there is no rev hang...

I hate rev hang myself. I'm no expert, but it makes it difficult to heel n toe with sever rev hang. Just as you anticipate the revs to reach a certain point it hangs and throws off your rhythm. Hope for those of you who got the MT it doesn't have it.

All cars have it these days, it's to reduce HC emissions. When the engine decelerates quickly I'm guessing there's a bit of "ECU lag" because the sensors aren't picking up on the decreased airflow immediately, and you end up having excess fuel injected which comes out the tailpipe in the form of black smoke or a fireball + black smoke. I think that's the reason some cars have that fireball or puff of smoke come out when they shift gears.
My S4 has zero rev hang, and it actually revs quite freely; surprising for a 3800lb luxury sport saloon. It's the easiest car to rev match, too!

I plan on taking my BRZ for a test drive before signing the papers. If I notice any rev-hang at all I'm walking away. It's that annoying.

I can imagine how annoying it would be but I'm sure there's a way to get rid of it. Sign the papers!
