They basically just rendered the FT1 concept car in that one. They needed to get creative (and therefore wrong) on the 86mk2 because if they just drew the actual mk1 car it wouldn't get your attention.

Obviously, but so did many other car magazines but none of them came this close. They also got the dimensions pretty close.

Well yes, that's pretty much what my original post said. Bestcar is usually wrong... but they came pretty close in both rendering and specs when it came to the Zupra.




Anyways, back on topic. I'm not saying Bestcar will be right with the "new" Toyobaru, we shall see.

The nice thing about the 86 platform was that it was designed specifically for enthusiasts, not for salespeople. In the line of the Miata, S2000, MR2, NSX, the impracticality of design goes against what the market dictates. I mean, within reason...

My 4th gen SS had factory t-tops and they leaked no matter what you did in a heavy rain storm or car wash. Having said that I'd still prefer the removable roof over a convertible or hardtop.

I'd love a t top or targa car again.

Those renders are too tame. The Toyota looks too much like a BRZ. Toyota clearly wanted a visual distinction between the 86 and the BRZ hence the revised front end on the latest version. I think going forward they will push for an even more dramatic difference between the twins. Just like Firebird/Camaro or Challenger/Cuda the future twins will show more differences than similarities.

My targa top never leaked. It was a pretty simple cover. Basically it was a piece of convertible top stretched between a 3 inch piece of fiberglass in the front and the back that went into standard convertible top "holes" on both sides. The way it was shaped there really wasn't a way for it to leak unless you closed something in under the leading edge.

It was a very good fit, and the whole top rolled up and could be put on the back seat or the cargo area under the liftgate taking up very little room. You actually couldn't tell from a distance it wasn't a hard panel (see it in the background behind my MR2 below).



I thought the car looked good with the panel off as well. I don't have a photo but this is a same year Firebird that had the treatment done to it.

That's very nice. Although, the side-mirror mounted on the door panel needs to go.

For the rear... Meh. The current car is garbage from the back, so anything will be an improvement.
