Difficult and ill-advised to try to make a car intended as a fixed-roof coupe into an open-top roadster. Again, you're gonna add weight and sacrifice stiffness, there's just no way around it. The roof as a shear panel is just soooo structurally efficient.
There is also the issue of crash crumple zones and longitudinal impact resistance that comes into play. It isn't just performance stiffness that would have to be made up for without the full roof. The roof itself does not give strength but it does direct the forces of a crash to the places that can absorb it.

People think that the Targa was a Toyota concept but it was actually a custom made by Cartel Customs. It did not need to be reinforced to pass crash tests like a production car would.

I don’t fit in a MX-5 either I’m 6’2” with long legs so the head room is not terrible, but my legs are folded up. Lol It’s one of the many reasons I love the 86 so much, I fit with room to spare. You’re right though the RF is so damn cool, and you get a convertible and a fixed roof. I don’t care about the extra weight.

I also forgot to mention the MR2’s targa top. I don’t know why but I love targa tops. I would seriously consider trading in my FR-S for a removable roof 86.

Get and keep them all! Seriously, cars like the turbo MR2 won’t ever be made again. Hell I still can’t believe the 86/BRZ was ever made. It doesn’t make Toyota or Subaru any money. It does create an insane amount of brand loyalty though.
The new Supra is going to be one of the best sports cars ever. What people are already doing with it, it’s crazy. And there will be a manual version, I know Toyota will do it.

If I was an Emory, Singer, Ruff, etc. and dedicated to 86 like they’re dedicated to 911 this (old world targa style panels) would be my first major body style modification. The ND RF seems too mechanically complex for my old man/old school aesthetics.

I completely agree, and it works pretty good for the C7 Corvette. That car isn’t too shabby.

I'm sorry to say this, but they just look... wrong.

I couldn't even point to what it is that I dislike in that design, but my brain tells me something is off there.

Why the boxer was used is explained in full. Not sure why people think it is a mystery.

This is really interesting, I didn’t realize how much Toyota was in the twins. For me it’s a match made in heaven, as I’m a fanboy for Toyota and Subaru. Now if Toyota would partner with Mazda we could get some really interesting stuff...

Pardon my ignorance (read: poor comprehension maybe)

Could you please point me in the right direction for why the boxer was used, apart from it's a Subaru item in basically a Subaru.

Disclaimer: I do like both Toyota and Subaru, for multiple reasons, I am jadded a bit though, blind faith in marketing and branding tends to muddy the waters.

As stated, I've owned a few of both and will continue to buy from them as they are really the only two car brands that I would purchase, price, reliability, after sales service and support are heads and shoulders above anything in their price points.

Disclaimer to the disclaimer: I don't really like the boxer engine for a few reasons, but, not enough to not buy my 86.

Excellent marketing and use of advertisement.

I acknowledge the relationship with the 800, but Toyota originally dropped the for a reason.

Anyways, they are my "somewhat" jaded thoughts on the matter of why a Toyota has a boxer engine.

Are the twins awesome, yes

Do they come with enough power, yes

Are they excellent bang for your buck, yes

Do I wish they had a high reving in line 4, yes

Are they extra stupid fun balls amaze with a turbo, why yes, yes they are.

How fun are forums and opinions, even more fun than a turbo twin.

I couldn't find the other origin post right away. But considering that is marketing material, it is going to sound like it was marketings idea.

There is little doubt there is some marketing spin on it. Don't think that the engine was developed specifically for this car just because Subaru was involved though. Even removing the marketing biases from that write up it indicates that Toyota specifically desired a Subaru power plant to fit in with the overall vision.
The whole idea that this car is a "Toyota" can be had to break from. It isn't a Toyota. Isn't a Subaru either. It is a hybrid that uses bits of both and the fact that it is assembled in a Subaru plant doesn't mean they decided to use a Subaru engine.

I for one look forward to seeing the TNGA based 86 concept with the turbo inline boxer motor at Tokyo next month.
