People think that the Targa was a Toyota concept but it was actually a custom made by Cartel Customs. It did not need to be reinforced to pass crash tests like a production car would.

I don’t fit in a MX-5 either I’m 6’2” with long legs so the head room is not terrible, but my legs are folded up. Lol It’s one of the many reasons I love the 86 so much, I fit with room to spare. You’re right though the RF is so damn cool, and you get a convertible and a fixed roof. I don’t care about the extra weight. I also forgot to mention the MR2’s targa top. I don’t know why but I love targa tops. I would seriously consider trading in my FR-S for a removable roof 86. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Get and keep them all! Seriously, cars like the turbo MR2 won’t ever be made again. Hell I still can’t believe the 86/BRZ was ever made. It doesn’t make Toyota or Subaru any money. It does create an insane amount of brand loyalty though. The new Supra is going to be one of the best sports cars ever. What people are already doing with it, it’s crazy. And there will be a manual version, I know Toyota will do it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I completely agree, and it works pretty good for the C7 Corvette. That car isn’t too shabby. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

This is really interesting, I didn’t realize how much Toyota was in the twins. For me it’s a match made in heaven, as I’m a fanboy for Toyota and Subaru. Now if Toyota would partner with Mazda we could get some really interesting stuff... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Could you please point me in the right direction for why the boxer was used, apart from it's a Subaru item in basically a Subaru. Disclaimer: I do like both Toyota and Subaru, for multiple reasons, I am jadded a bit though, blind faith in marketing and branding tends to muddy the waters. As stated, I've owned a few of both and will continue to buy from them as they are really the only two car brands that I would purchase, price, reliability, after sales service and support are heads and shoulders above anything in their price points. Disclaimer to the disclaimer: I don't really like the boxer engine for a few reasons, but, not enough to not buy my 86.

Marketing then got hold and sold the product through recorded interviews with "company" engineers, classic political marketing. Excellent marketing and use of advertisement. I acknowledge the relationship with the 800, but Toyota originally dropped the for a reason. Anyways, they are my "somewhat" jaded thoughts on the matter of why a Toyota has a boxer engine. Are the twins awesome, yes Do they come with enough power, yes Are they excellent bang for your buck, yes Do I wish they had a high reving in line 4, yes Are they extra stupid fun balls amaze with a turbo, why yes, yes they are. How fun are forums and opinions, even more fun than a turbo twin.

I couldn't find the other origin post right away. But considering that is marketing material, it is going to sound like it was marketings idea.

The whole idea that this car is a "Toyota" can be had to break from. It isn't a Toyota. Isn't a Subaru either. It is a hybrid that uses bits of both and the fact that it is assembled in a Subaru plant doesn't mean they decided to use a Subaru engine.

LOL, I’m not quite on the dark side of scepticism yet but to completely misquote a video recording is disgraceful journalism.
I still think where there’s smoke there’s fire with some of these reports, but if you’ve come across a lot of these I can understand your cynicism. I’m biased, but one thing is for sure I think the next gen will be a great car, especially if it’s an evolution of an already fantastic first gen. I for one look forward to seeing the TNGA based 86 concept with the turbo inline boxer motor at Tokyo next month.
