Why? The 86 has become the most successful nameplate for Toyota, easily besting Celica, Supra, MR2 sales. Would be dumb for them to drop the name if the industry ever went into an EV era..

Not even close. They made the Celica for over 30 years. MR2’s for over 20. OG 86’s we’re only built for like 4 years. Current gen “86” not even 10. Supra’s not even the same class of car. No compare. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I’m a Toyota fan, so as much as I love the platform I wouldn’t mind seeing another nameplate return. It was cool seeing them turn the AE86 chassis name into a full blown car, but I rather it stay the affordable, 4cyl, RWD coupe.

I’d prefer a hybrid over an EV. An electric motor doesn’t pull to redline the way an internal combustion engine does. Electric motors have massive torque at a stand still and it drops pretty quickly when the speed goes up. In a properly tuned hybrid you can keep it feeling like a sports car in a way no EV can manage. Think like the NSX.

Yup, more recognizable names. The “86” name/heritage is recognizable but it was a chassis designation originally (and people get kind of confused on what it’s name was). Original car’s name was a Corolla GTS/Levin/Sprinter Trueno

Given Akio Toyoda as the Toyota CEO, I'm sure he'll continue the affordable RWD sports car project. He doesn't seem to be the type that wants to make Toyota another boring car company given his decisions.

Interesting perspective, not a bad read.
From the article. “The old 2.0 sounded more like a sewing machine than most of its owners would admit, whereas the feel and noise that this new 2.4-litre produces is, weirdly, slightly more rotary-like.” https://www.whichcar.com.au/reviews/...al-first-drive |

Though, part of this is due to having a speaker in the dash to help pump fake noise in via what Toyota calls Active Sound Control. |
