Damn, some nightmare stories in here. Jun 2012 build here. Glad I'm going for a full rebuild instead of sending it back for a 'recall'.

$8.5k for a new shortblock? You can get an Outfront with that kinda money. Did you ask them if it came with a BJ

Now that I look closer, I agree that the level looks to be a bit above the lower hole. The upper hole doesn't look like there is any oil in it -

Yeah, I can see why folks see that in the first pic I posted yesterday... it's just a bad shot. To be honest, I didn't even realize those were holes.. I thought they were marks! In any case, though, they were both full and then some. Look at the pics I edited into my previous post a few minuts ago.

Yeah, that's too much.
Some vinyl tubing and a dollar store turkey baster down the dip tube will get you to a less congested level.

Or a FuMoto drain valve.

How would you see the level with a Fumoto valve?

Oh yeah, that picture shows a completely different story.

Much simpler to drop out a measured quart or so without losing the whole fill.
Or you can undo the sump plug and get oil all over your nitrile gloves and the floor.

... and your elbow, and, and ...

... and this should probably be in another thread altogether.

Just got mine back yesterday. I’m noticing a very faint smell of burning oil. Can that just be related from getting a new short block?

edit: OK, back with two pics, one of each side of the dipstick. Another thing I've noticed the past couple times I've checked the oil is that, when I check it cold, the color is MUCH different than it does when warm. When warm, the oil looks brand new, clear, and very hard to see, but cold it looks a lot darker, especially for oil that is only 630 miles and a few weeks old. Does that indicate anything, other than that dirt has had time to settle? Wouldn't the dirt settle below the dipstick anyway?

On the first pic, one of the arrows points to one little circular dry spot. BOTH the high and low level holes are completely full of oil, and the level is clearly above the high mark, more so on one side. Soo.. close enough, or drain some? Right now, it doesn't look any higher than it does when I get it back from a dealership oil change.
I reckon it's OK, I'd leave it alone.

When your eyes get a bit older, I suggest you have someone else check the oil in your car - your track record is indicating that -

I know that when I read the oil level on my dipstick, with my macular degeneration and poor low light eyesight and wearing trifocals, I can "read" almost anything I want to see.

It's most likely just some stray oil burning off, not to worry.

Just don't read anymore posts about the after action reports from some folks that have had the recall work done -

Nevermind I misread your post. You were talking about draining oil not checking the dipstick. Hahaha

Oh I feel like I was one of the founding fathers of catastrophic post recall work haha Spun rod bearing resulted in a new short block. Here I am a day later. Let’s see how long this holds up

Who paid for the new short block?

Hey Pinoy,

I had the same thing when I got mine after the recall work. I also thought it was some remaining oil.
385km later, it started knocking and my engine died.

Just to be sure, keep checking, keep "being paranoid" about it for a while, and if you doubt, bring it back asap.
