Recently got pulled over in Irvine for exhaust, the officer knew what I did exhaust wise, UEL headers, catback and OFT tune. But since I volunteered to open my hood even without a warrant and was nice about everything. He let me off with a fix it ticket for front plate. I got off lucky, but if you head to Temecula or Ontario area, they are really strict and cracking down worse than OC area. I casually cruise past CHP and normal patrol cars and they don’t bat an eye cause I’m driving at a normal speed and not wreckless. If you do get headers just don’t do anything stupid and don’t be a hard ass to police.

Irvine has a lot of Subies so the cops are pretty aware of the "rumble" on non-Subie cars unfortunately :|

Using the GReddy SP Elite axleback only is so quiet compared to my EVO GT. I want my UEL back!

there is no way he would know you have a tune. The only thing I would ever admit to is having an exhaust. Depending on the situation I might let the cop see into the engine bay...

Especially if it's an OFT tune it reads exactly the same as stock on tech-stream. Unless the cop is a FR-S/86/BR-Z fanatic and knows how the tunes change the idle or the sound on idle

Way up north I'd say go ahead and tint, straight pipe, no front plate, no cats, etc. The CHP wouldn't care.

Here I'd say you're playing with fire. Either register it out of state or pay the toll.

if you have tints and no front plate, it'll just get you in trouble more. i crossed lanes into a cop and the punk pulled me over. also subtly mentioned i could've been ticketed for my perrin 2.5" resonated catback (no other exhaust mods). the whole "irvine cops love giving tickets" is correct. crime's low there, got to get that revenue in.

He said and quote “Your car is like a neon sign to us, but as long as you’re not doing anything illegal such as racing, speeding, then we won’t hassle you. It’s a cool car, just maybe get a quieter exhaust.” He only turned around cause my exhaust is pretty loud.

I'm always surprised to hear people get tickets for exhaust with an 86, meanwhile around my house every asshat with their lifted f-150, camaro/mustang with the super raspy pipes, and loud ass 350z's never seems to be an issue for cops.

I'm too old for the loud exhaust on my car but can only think of maybe 1 or 2 times i heard an 86 and thought it was annoying but not nearly as bad as most other cars

I've only ever been pulled over for my exhaust being too loud once and Ive had my headers on for about 3+ years now. Fyi Im running jdl catless header, jdl resonated, catted front over pipe, and a 2.5 single ark design catback. It's pretty loud but not my loudest setup. That one time i got pulled over, I was pulled over for crossing a solid white line exiting the freeway. The highway patrol pulled me over and than said my exhaust was too loud and wrote me a ticket for crossing the line, fix it ticket for my exhaust and a ref ticket to get smogged. I got pulled over in el monte just a mile from home. I was commuting from oc for work at the time. Luckily for me, the highway patrol never submitted the ticket or something because it never poped up on their database, nor did i ever get a letter saying how much I owe.
