So about that Toyota EV manual transmission patent that they registered some time ago

https://www.hagerty.co.uk/articles/n...anual-gearbox/

They seem to have a proof of concept/prototype of it at work
(they're using a Lexus UX300e as a test mule, a vehicle with 0 history of having a stick shift)

Since this is all completely simulated (i assume) i wonder if you can just "turn it off" and drive the EV as a regular automatic EV when you want.....

I mean, shit, I'd love a manual Lexus in general. Especially an IS350!

Hmmmm. At first I thought they put an electric motor on the input shaft of a manual transmission. This would introduce parasitic loss, but at least it is "real" to some extent. But what they did is make a very expensive and very silly video game wheel and shifter setup. We have exceeded peak car and entered meme territory.

Lol @ a transmission in an EV but I guess a manual and amplified engine noise and you’ll feel whole again. The fake meat of the auto industry

Wrong. Do more research.

Maybe they mean that EVs do have transmissions? In the case of the Taycan and upcoming S63e, there are 2 gears.

But there is no reason to give the driver a choice in shifting. If you want a change in power delivery or throttle smoothing, that can be done with a button on the steering wheel. Why take up center console and pedal box space with mechanical hardware that does nothing but trigger a senor to change the software - same as a button?

But I would admit that I don't know how many more gears an EV needs. I guess 2 makes sense for cars that can go over 150 mph - while electric motors can spin over 10000 rpm happily all day, I am assuming having that wide of a spread on a single gear does impact performance and efficiency.. . But does having 3+ gears necessarily make an EV more efficient such that it offsets the added upfront cost, especially for people who will never exceed 85? My gut feeling is no.

The way things are going in the automotive landscape, (Subscription services to unlock vehicle features, Paid DLC to unlock MORE horsepower, ultrawide scerens, etc), why the hell not include a simulated video game steering wheel setup? We're well on our way to making cars a rolling Forza or Gran Turismo simulator....lets go all the way!

Guessing it must be simulated like a CVT or something IDK. Interesting for sure.

bumping this because.....

someone drove it:
https://insideevs.com/features/69387...ission-tested/

seems like its programmed similarly to a GR Corolla setup.

And it sounds like its good.
Yes its all fake but it seems to work real good at providing that manual transmission experience.

plus you can turn it off if you want the no effort BEV experience.

Just for fun i went to the EV reddit to see what their reactions are...
good god they are so head-up-their-ass about EV's lol. "its useless, whats the point, gimmick, why you gotta mess with EV motor? keep ICE related technology back in the stone ages where it belongs! toyota is the devil with their anti EV lobbvying! blah blah"
EV apologists seem to live in this unicorn world of EV perfection and everything else is utter trash.

OMG, that's hilarious. It'll even simulate stalling.

Next up: Money shifting

The good news is that you wont blow up the engine if you do it wrong.....

but maybe a BSOD will show up on the dash and crash your EV lol.
