I'm reluctant to argue aesthetics too much because looks are completely subjective - whatever floats your boat, but for me I'm not a fan of the 22's racer side skirts, full bumper height black plastic vents (that house a small functional orifice), or the GR's vertical duckbill (the automative equivalent of a backwards cap to my eye). As for the lights of the FT86 - the launch model taillights have a classic circular design with a small indicator to the side, and the headlights were clearly aiming for the R8 of the time (which is regarded as a clean and restrained design). ![]() If you look at the FT86 in isolation and divorce it from the shiitty mods and the "culture" around the car, it's an elegant, unfussy and yet memorable design. I'd like that FA24, but despite finding it better in the flesh, I'll never fall in lust with the design of the '22 twins. ![]() |

I would say no, because the ride actually feels softer overall, except for when you hit bumps you feel the difference in how the chassis soaks them up. It's kind of hard to explain because it actually feels softer and firmer at the same time. That being said, the overall ride quality is significantly better. This car is a much better daily than the first gen. It's more comfortable and easier to drive in every way.

Whereas the 2nd gen has gone away from that 2000GT influence. |

![]() Agree that Toyota were keen to reference the 2000GT at the launch of the 86 - felt like a Toyota design that went through the concept car phases and was a celebration of the brand (despite being built by Subaru) The '22 on the other hand feels more like a Subaru product - global passenger car styling that has been sportified with body kits, lowering and vents. The FT86 didn't feel related to the Impreza, but you can see the family connection between the '22 WRX and the '22 Twins. ![]() Like you, I found the new BRZ to be good looking in the flesh (my parter thinks it's cute and wants an auto for her daily), but if I wasn't already invested in the platform, I'm not sure I would have really paid much attention to the launch of the new twins. |

I think the answer is the 2nd Gen is not different enough if you are currently happy with your first Gen, especially if you are modified. However, if you were in the market for a new car, have higher miles or just want something new, the 2nd Gen is a great choice. If you love your first Gen, you will love your 2nd Gen. My consensus reading everything and all the YouTube reviews.

Fix whats broke (motor, interior), improve what isnt (everything else). and that depends on the owners to determine if theres enough of a change to justify switching from first to second gen. In a rare case there really isnt anything made worse in the second gen....except maybe the steering feel but not by much from what i've read. |

When second gen came out I like it so much I ended up buying it, even though initially I thought of buying something cheaper on the used market. |

Accurate. It’s improved but very familiar at the same time. It’s uncanny because sometimes when I’m just putting around I forget it’s a different car than my modded 13. It didn’t lose its soul which is a monumental achievement in and of itself these days.

Any good reason to stick with 1st Gen?

Funny, I’ve thought this before that the styling evolution of the ZC6 into the ZD8 really reminds me of the 987 becoming the 981. Both cars retain the overall proportions of their predecessors, but they resolve most of the awkward details, like the transition of the rear window/hatch and the side intakes on the 987, and the fender bump/headlights, and fender vents on the ZC6, and the tail light integration with overall body lines on both. |
