Only 8600 Toyota 86s will be available in 2017

Well unfortunately everything depreciates at a ridiculous rate, unless you got a damn 12 year old Evo 8 and u can still resell it for 75% of what it cost when was new, or a damn overpriced Ferrari. I do agree with everybody that the 86's are overpriced or if they came stock with a few more things and 250 Hp it might outweigh the sticker price. Depreciation is always high for the first few years, but in any light i love my FRS for the sexy as hell looks, wonderful handling and decent acceleration(slowly adding mods to make it faster).

It wasn't until 2011 that the GT got a >400hp engine and it picked up some weight along the way while the base model 370Z was cheaper the whole time. It was a kickass car for ~3 years.

Overpriced compared to what? It's cheaper than a Miata with better standard equipment and go back and adjust for inflation it's one of the cheapest sports cars outside of the 60's tin cans Europe put out.

There's a lot of fresh engineering in this thing, the car was designed practically from the ground up with the exception of a few parts bin components like swaybars, differential, window switches, door handles and such. Mazda reuses it's economy car engines with slightly hotter heads, Nissan reuses their truck engines, Ford and VW reuse their economy car chassis. Hell the Fiat Spyder uses the transmission Mazda put out 10+ years ago and an engine that came out 8 years ago with practically no changes to them.

Everybody else cuts major corners in this market except for Toyobaru. If you think the car 'needs something' then you're not the target audience for this car.

I wouldn't call that "trashed."

2010's GT had 315hp and 325tq. And 2011 got the 5.0 which was end of story.

So for one year, maybe 2, they were neck and neck (MotorTrend says they were both $34k as tested). That qualifies as "trashed the Mustang GT for a few years in terms of performance?"

Whoa whao whoa buddy don't bite my head off cause i have an opinion, i am very happy with my FRS and have been for 2 years, all i'm saying is i think(and many many others have said as well) that i think a little more power from the factory should have been had. 250 would have been a great number to start with, Hell even 230 sounds like a great number, thank God for the lightweight otherwise it would be much slower. I'm well aware of its capabilities and engineering and know that parts are all new for this ride, thanks for the reminder. A Miata cost more cause of being a convertible btw.

I have a '15 FR-S as my daily and a '16 4Runner Trail as my weekend (family with me). It is a pretty sweet gig.

You make it sound like on Friday afternoon Toyota people were in a meeting room voting on how much horsepower it should have.

They put blood sweat and tears into this thing to get 200 hp.

"Oh just increase the displacement or put a turbo on it!"

Yea, not odd at all, it was a marketing ploy (which I benefited from). Do a search for "First 86" threads in 2012 that will explain it, but primarily it was a Scion promotion where 86 people that registered on their website were selected to get their car about 30 days before everyone else. We also got a trip to Long Beach, CA to go to a 3 day event over Easter weekend where we got to drive the car, attend the inaugural drift event for it, and generally eat and get drunk. Lots of various gifts as well.

Oh, and we got to shake hands with pretty much the entire Scion corporate staff (all 35 of them).

Scion tried to make it a social media type promotion but it pretty well flopped. They could have made a lot more of it through traditional media, but wasn't their style.

Just saw the commercial for the first time this morning. At first I thought it was a bad idea, but after reading all the comments thus far, I'd say it was good marketing. I've owned cars much faster (and much heavier), but none that handle anywhere near as nice as this.

Early on, I was sure by this time in my life I would have been driving a Porsche - but in a lot of ways - I feel lucky to have this instead.

No 4 door. No Shooting Brake. No Turbo hotrod. No convertible. No Targa. And I highly doubt they will ever make any of those. Wasn't the vision for the car and none would sell enough units to make the costs worth it.

But since you haven't included the Submersible Stretch-Limo Toyota FR-S, with rear sky-vision glass roof, mini-bar and surf board package, its still on the drawing board. That's a relief.
