I went about three or four years ago. I viewed it as the trip of a lifetime though, and it was on my bucket list sooo... we had a private chauffeured car, and private guides the entire time. Pompei/Herculaneum were not crowded at all. No real restrictions other than what was necessary for preservation. You were walking into the buildings, and although instructed not to (and really - please don't) you could touch the murals and mosaics easily - but again please don't!!!) Our guide was a degreed historian and the experience was better than I dreamed.

I seem to recall that the tour buses are on a set schedule and our guide specifically avoided them.

The only crowd in Rome was at one of the most famous fountains; people were crowded about 6 deep around the edge. No crowds in the catacombs, churches, Coliseum, etc.

Okay, I was wrong. Here is a photo in Pompei taken March 18, 2018.

Not a great picture; rather just to show the condition - not very crowded...

Also a picture from inside one of Pompei's brothels. This was taken from an iphone, and to give you an idea of how close I was I doubt the painting was over 2 feet wide.

What I can say is that it is not what the travel channels would make you believe. The tourist zones are crowed, dirty, smelly and very commercialized. The non tourist zones were just crowded, dirty and smelly.
Probably the best time to visit there was about 2,000 years ago so maybe @humfrz has some suggestions.

I did visit Italy on leave from Germany and again it isn't what you would think. Pretty much any of the tourist areas are absolutely thronged with people all the time. The countryside is nicer but you can see almost the same thing by driving through rural California.
Well, yes, it has been a while since I visited. My caution is to not get too close to the front of a camel, they can bite you!

Get it. You'll like it.
It is currently 65 degrees and breezy. I’m in the shade on my balcony at full “zero gravity” angle.

This was a damn good purchase.

Didn't see you're earlier post but we have two zero gravity folding chairs similar to that we take to the beach. They are heavy but so comfortable it's worth the haul across the sand.

I was thinking of doing that this summer as well! Some reviews said it’s too heavy, but I can’t imagine it being too difficult to bring into the sand.

One of the more amazing things to me was that the ENTIRE house was on a single 20 amp circuit. In the "old days" there were no microwaves, televisions, blow driers, clothes driers, computers, etc. and homes had very modest electrical service!
back in the day, they needed 2 things. a coffee maker, and a light in the room.

i haven't seen any houses like that since the 90's, but my area used to have a lot of houses with a 60A service, and 4 fuses for the entire house, with knob and tube wiring. usually 1 plug, and 1 light/switch per room, with 2! plugs in the kitchen for the coffee maker.

So I'm taking my dog out yesterday before we go to bed, she's a chocolate lab mix with pit-bull, if you may know, they have a stupid high-prey sense. Have you ever seen how dogs shake a toy? She has done that to an unfortunate rabbit and racoon. The racoon growled back which I think she wasn't expecting, so then she let it go and just watched from a distance, I had to corral them away from her, no bites (rabies), thankfully. The rabbit let out a scream that still haunts me. After those incidents I go out before her to scan for any animals and then I call her out. Yesterday, I must've been out of it and completely ignored the fact that there was an Opossum outside right by the tree line, separated from my yard by a sloppy wire fence, as soon as I saw her reaction I knew she was going for the kill. As I yell to her and try to catch her, she goes straight for the unsuspecting Opossum and manages to not bite it, but tackle it, he instantly goes stiff and I could start smelling the distinctive odor they emit. So I'm like great, I still have to fend her off so she doesn't actually harm it. I pick up a rake, and try to pick him up to put him on the other side of the fence, but he wakes up, with a mouth open as defending himself, but I love Opossums too much so I start talking to the thing saying "Hey bud, are you okay? Here let me get you somewhere safe" I swear to you, this thing understood me, he calmed down, and even walked beside me as I was guiding it to an opening. Every time my dog was trying to block him, he would just look at me like "Bro, a little help?" So I would fend my dog off again, and continued to walk beside me, we found an opening, it looked back at me, and then went on his merry way.
