Scratch that. Looking at it from different angles in the video, it sticks out from the bumper.

Subaru and Toyota clearly have one goal - to make it faster than the MX5. I suspect it might be.

However, if the 400Z is anywhere near how the prototype looks, there is no contest for me. The Nissan is sexier and faster but will be more money/ higher mpg.

What is curious is the Japs here have finally shown a clear lack of logic. These cars do not sell well generally and they will soon be pushed aside by electric. So they really needed to make this as sexy as possible and they didn't.
Looks are so subjective. I believe the 400Z looks like the worst modern car I've ever seen, but that's just me. There's plenty of folks claiming they love this look, you can only please so many. To be honest, they probably pleased the right people, those disappointed in the looks, like us, are probably the minority, as we are more pure enthusiasts of the first gen. The millions yelling about everything wrong with the first gen are probably the ones falling in love with the new looks.

Why didn'y they make the first ones turbo when the supra was still a picture on a drawing board then?
They are not "protecting the Supra" they are making the car they started out which was a low power NA not a turbo supercar.

How is beating the MX5 "clearly" a goal?

Who says they don't sell well? Are there piles around unsold? They sold all they made every year so they met plan. That is selling just fine. Let's not mix planned low volumes up with poor sales since they are two radically different things.

The first gen BRZ and facelift models looked like their own car. This one looks like a Ferrari, Porsche and RC-F in just the 3/4 front view. That should be a complement right? Maybe it will grow on me, I didn't like the twins when they first came out and now one sits in the garage. lol

I like everything about that new engine. 2.4l 13.5:1 compression. Its going to love bolt-ons and E85. I learned my lesson with first year cars with my 2013 so I don't see one in my future as well as the fact the V8 RC-F chunky boy is calling my name.

No. That was a supplier issue that affected almost all Subaru engines at the time.

There was no need to back then, the car was still close to the MX5 - its main competitor. MX5 only pulled away from the BRZ/GT86 recently.

We are not close to supercar speeds, with or without a turbo. The car is a failure commercially. A turbo would have helped the deficit in the looks department. However a turbo would get the car too close to the Supra.

MX5 is the higher rated car, faster too, better sales. It is no coincidence that one of the first comments - about anything from the Subaru test driver was: 'You have to compare it to a much better MX5.'

They don't make too many more than they are projected to sell. Sales have been disappointing from the get go I am afraid.

LOL clikbait commentators that do not know the difference between poor sales and planned low production.
Did you read anything beyond the headlines of those sites?
How a failure? They didn't sell Corolla volumes? Can you show me they wanted to sell Corolla volumes?
ALL sportscars dropped in the last few years. Check out Mustang sales.
They always said that they would never turbo this car. It should not have come as a surprise to anybody that they didn't.

Anyone else notice that they increased wheelbase by .2 inches? I wonder which axel they moved.

Looks are subjective, of course, but I'm sure the performance of this new version will be much improved!

Like others have said, the design feels... off. Maybe it'll grow on people as it ages as people tend to not like refreshes at first. I'd be curious to see what the aftermarket will do for the much maligned front end. No helping the fundamental shape of those new headlight units though. From some angles it looks great (rear three quarter, profile) from others (front, front three quarter) it looks ungainly. The rear end looks like a Honda Accord mixed with Lexus RC-F. The front looks like a weird impression of Porsche something-or-other. On the interior, the new seats look fantastic and that dash design reminds me of the Toyota MR2 Spyder. I'm still trying to decide if that's a pro or a con... The digital gauge cluster seems like a checkbox the marketing department demanded be checked. Digital clusters tend to age quickly and this isn't a fancy enough one to really be excited about and runs counter to the "simple and affordable sports car" ethos of the car.

Mixed bag, really.
