So glad they left it off. Wonder if I can just leave it unplugged when I go to coilovers with aftermarket lower control arms.

Man on the streets of SF around 19th in the morning it would have been handy. But then I would have never learned the art of the quick foot start or the subtlety of the ebrake start. Some hills are so steep you can't not be scared, it's apart of the fun of manual transmission.

I never had a car with hill assist, how far will it let you roll back on a really steep hill?

My question is ...... if you were going UP this hill and discovered you were going the wrong way ..... and couldn't get turned around ...... and had to back down the hill ....... would the hill assist prevent that ...... ??

I don't recall seeing them use handbrakes on The Streets of San Francisco.

It doesn't hold it indefinitely.

I'm not a badass I guess.

Because this is exactly what driving in SF is like:

It does but it is totally useless and makes one stall unnecessary on the tiniest of "hills"(bumps)

The hill assist on the 2017's hold you for ~3 seconds if you are facing an uphill in 1st gear, or facing downhill in reverse gear, it doesn't let you roll back at all. On very slight inclines it won't hold you and you will roll back slightly as normal. Once you can feel the clutch grab, the hill assist does disengage itself, but if you don't give it enough gas it will hold the brake enough to/almost stall the car.

It activated on any incline in my car even ones that I couldn't tell were there

I don't remember the exact combination but I looked in a 2017 BRZ manual at the Subaru I work at and you have to do some combination of the track and traction control buttons to turn it on, the car comes with it set off by default, which is odd because on the WRX and STI it comes set to on by default.

Edit: I do see that someone already supplied the "cheat codes".

No hill start, no hand brake. If you can't balance your car with the clutch and avoid stall, you just don't know how to drive manual. That is it.
