Junkyard Turbo on stock
What would be the best junkyard Turbo setup for 2.0l boxer engine, Volkswagen 2.0L tsi, or something else?

Junkyard turbos are no different than new turbos. Different shapes, sizes, efficiencies at different power levels.
What goals do you have? How much fab work are you contemplating here? Where physically do you want the turbo to sit?

From what I understand of reading threads here and other turbo manufacture kits are con rods are weakest point in making power and that limit is 9 psi. Obviously there is not a junkyard kit that drops in, the least fabrication is always ideal. With these stock parameters in mind.

The gt28 series is pretty great for any aspirations under 400whp

unless you have fabrication capabilities or know some one that will fab stuff for you, in my opinion it really isn't worth it... especially with JDLs kit hovering around 3k+ and you can get a nice garret GT turbo... gt28/gtx28 like someone mentioned is perfect for anything below 400whp. it'll net you around 330-350whp with e85/flex fuel mix.

Yours, if you buy the JDL kit with it.
Why the fascination with junkyard turbos? Almost all of the junkyard turbos are going to have incredibly oddly shaped housings on the compressor and exhaust side, it will be a nightmare.

probably not.
You'd be better off buying an ebay turbo than finding a good junk yard turbo...Either way you have to be able to fab.
If you want good quality and less expensive AND you can fab. Get an ebay turbo and buy a garrett center section. If you're going straight up stock on pump gas, a t04b would probably be a safe bet, but not a lot of room for growth. Jaden |

This is what is they list on RockAuto for the 15-20WRX with a turbocharged FA20 engine in it. I think it's the FA20D engine, but a lot of parts are showing FA20E and FA20F as I peruse the different sections. They are out of stock so no price is shown, but they do share the part number.
Mahle/Clevite 745TC23593000 Chasing the part number, Autozone has them for just under $1k. You could call the wrecking yards and likely find one, but the intake plumbing is quite different on that car vs the 86. Also, that engine is at a little lower compression as well, I think 10.5:1, but that won't matter. If you're committed to the junkyard parts bin, find the FA20 turbo charged models and start looking. Kinda looks like it may just be the 15-20 WRX that has it. The STIs bump to a 2.5 liter powerplant. I thought there was one in the Outbacks somewhere, but a quick look proved me wrong. https://www.autozone.com/external-en...000/187601_0_0 Good luck. Last edited by jeepmor; 05-02-2021 at 03:46 PM. |
