3rd gear grind

Anyone one else having trouble getting into 3rd gear?
Its happened 3 times today. I have almost 2k miles on there. Hate hearing my gears grind.
It could just be me. I learned how to drive a stick in this car and i have it down..
Any suggestions?

Beats me... I have just over 400 miles on mine, and I don't have that particular issue.

I think you may be taking the shifter into 3rd gear a little faster than the clutch pedal being depressed properly...

When I first learned how to drive a manual on my Evo, I remember myself encountering similar obstacles... I suppose it comes down to practice, and also better understanding / learning the specific car's shifting and behavior.

Please feel free to correct me if I've mistaken.

No problems here... this thread makes me cringe coming from an 8th gen Si. Pleaseeee don't let the 86 have this problem too!

Only gear I've partially grinded was second and I know that was my fault on the clutchwork.

I have noticed that downshifting to fourth from sixth can be a bit tricky and I often go back into sixth. It's kind of funny at times, trying to rev match fourth to overtake only to get into sixth again.. very anticlimactic. Replacing the shift knob earlier today has made this easier for me to avoid!

Is there anything blocking the clutch pedal from traveling all the way down?

This happened to be once while driving the car very hard.. it was a painful experience!

I've driven standards for over 10 years, and have not had this issue.. Still I'm hoping that it was my error, not the cars.

Except it doesn't have a dual clutch transmission. It's a traditional automatic (a very good one apparently) with paddle shifters.

I haven't had any issues yet, im around 1700 mi.

My mkiv jetta had problems with second gear grinding and it was terrible. I really hope this car doesnt have issues with this, and if it does I hope it will come to subaru/toyotas attention quick enough to get it fixed.

Just re-iterating something I read from the other threads here, maybe the transmission fluid is low?

I've never had a grind, but do occasionally get a slight crunch (even that is a bit of an exaggeration) going into 3rd. I swapped the fluid for some fresh synthetic last night, and will put some miles on the car today to see if there is any difference. I don't expect there will be.

I have a harder time throwing into 5th. I don't use 5th a lot, but I have 3rd dropping in pretty clean now. Shift into 3rd once slowly, you will feel how the nob will auto center itself. I also found that under hand shifting for 3rd and paying attention to the nob centering, that helped me learn my spot for 3rd.

Toyota's X-Runners had a problem grinding when going into 5th gear. On the second trip to the dealer they just kept it and replaced the tranny...all good after that....
