So you're in Cali, how does one go about handling the emissions stuff with an engine swap like this? I don't see cats anywhere.

If you're talking about the structure above the radiator its mostly gone. It's main purpose was support for the factory hood latch and the hood but with aftermarket hood latches on the sides of the hood it isn't really even necessary. It is only there to support the hood/bumper seal.

It would be near impossible to register a swapped car in Cali with or without cats.

Many counties are smog exempt. There only needs to be a smog check performed on title transfers in those counties. Someone could register the car in another state too. They could also pay off a smog tech. None of this makes an engine swap legal, especially a catless one.

There are ways to legally swap a car, but it isn’t easy.

Probably, arguably, one of the cleanest, home-built swaps I have seen. Nice work.

You said earlier you got the motor from a race team you worked for. What is your background, career, etc? I’m seeing a car hoist and equipment that looks like you are not in a personal/home garage, but people have all sorts of things in their garages, so I could be mistaken. Just curious. Again, nice work.

Thanks!

I’m an automotive engineer and mainly specialize in testing and development. And do some fabrication work on the side as a hobby. I wish this was my garage but thankfully I had a friend who was kind enough to let me tie up his lift for a bit. It really is an impressive shop that he has at his house.

Is the support beam across the front where the intake goes completely gone or relocated?

The vertical piece that holds the factory hood latch is completely gone. The piece that goes above the radiator is still there but most of it is cut away for the intake to pass through. Right now it is really only holding the hood/bumper seal in place. The hood is very solid with just the aerocatch latches on the sides.

Might I ask what the total cost is? Dropping even an LS1 into my FRS would be a dream come true for me.

I haven’t added it up because I’d rather not know

The biggest cost factor is going to be what you decide to do with electronics. This was obviously on the pricier end with the motec ecu and aim pdm. But if you use a GM ecu, factory dash, etc. it would be a lot cheaper.
