2019 around 15k miles, 93 octane, and I get crickets. You can hear it if you stand in front of the car, but it's not obnoxious. But I mean what do you expect? It's a car. It makes noises.

I swear as soon as the gas stations around here start switching to “winter” fuel the crickets start chirping. And I’ve had much better luck with Top Tier fuel.

I agree, the twins aren’t meant to be a Rolls Royce. Still, the fuel pump can get loud on the twins. Almost to the point of being distracting. But I love the heck out of my car.

yeah it took a while to get used to the tractor sounds that this engine makes. I hardly notice them now.

I used to go to one that is called Puma (1 of the very few with 93oct) and they (like the other 95% of gas stations here) use 10%-15% ethanol in there fuels. A friend (he works with gas pumps and testing fuel grades) recommended Ecomaxx (which has no ethanol content) because he found out that Puma was not consistent with their 93oct grade fuel sometimes measuring a little under 93oct. When he tests Ecomaxx 93 he usually gets that or a bit above 93, so I started using it and within the 1st fill up the crickets starting fainting away. By the 2nd tank they were completely gone. After Hurricane Maria ran us over, getting picky with fuel brands was no option, so I started using whatever 93 or 91 was available (or could find) and the crickets came back as soon as I use other gas other than Ecomaxx with no ethanol in it.

In short; I believe is the ethanol that makes the pump chirp, but that's me with my own experience.

I need to become friends with a fuel tester in my area! That is very interesting stuff! I’ve always wondered how good the QC was for gasoline octane levels and additives.

Running a 2013 FRS. I've tried every fuel type under the sun. Some are far worse with chirping after emptying the tank and trying something else. Some are very moderate, some are very light with chirps but absolute none really got rid of them entirely.

ethanol content % didn't matter. E0 didn't matter. It chirps no matter what.

Same experience in Europe.
95-10 (equivalent to US 91 w/ max 10% ethanol) make the pump chirp
95-5 (same with max 5% ethanol) does too, possibly to a lesser extent
98-5 (equivalent to US 93-94, w/ max 5% ethanol) doesn't at all, no matter the brand

Consensus is that the higher ethanol content causes the pump to chirp. It's one of the things that kept me away from an E85 conversion.

Also, I saw or felt no performance difference whatsoever between any of these fuels. Car's stock and is a daily, YMMV (literally & figuratively) if you track a modded car.

Crickets love cheap gas. Higher quality fuel shuts them up.

There is no consensus on this subject. There are just as many people that have crickets on higher octane fuel as ones that don't have them on lower. Same applies for ethanol content.
It is pretty much an individual experience and what works for you may not for the next guy.

Call it the European consensus then, our fuels may be a little more tightly regulated as far as Ethanol content, and since they're quite taxed, fuel providers probably try to cram as much Ethanol as they possibly can in any liter of fuel they sell.

This results in there being an availability of fuel with an almost-fixed 5% ethanol and one with a similarly almost fixed 10% content. And our -admittedly relatively small- user base seems to have found a correlation between eth content and chirping.

I can get almost straight ethanol, no crickets.
