I have a frs and it comes with an alarm. There's a sticker on the drivers side window. And a little red light that blinks. I just looked at it and it's not factory, says autonation is the brand of the alarm.

Just as an FYI, the beep has nothing to do with the immobilizer. The immobilizer is always active whether the vehicle is locked or not.. The beep indicates all access points are closed, i.e. door pins and hood pin are activated, nothing else, not even that the doors themselves are locked. It's possible for access points to be closed and the doors still not lock.

Alarm question

All alarms are not created equal. If a thief wants what's in your car, or the car itself, badly enough they'll get it.

A properly installed alarm will keep the rookie thief at bay that's looking for nothing more than a cheap smash and grab steal but for the more experienced it's nothing more than a nuisance.

In my early 20s I would install an alarm in every vehicle I owned complete with backup batteries, multiple shock sensors, proximity sensors and even piezo sirens in the AC vents.

By my mid-20s I realized all of it was a waste of time and a lousy substitute for a good insurance policy.

Spec out your insurance policy and what it covers. If a rider policy will cover your wheels and high end audio, install fees, etc. for $20 per premium cycle it's probably $20 well spent. That peace of mind might cost you the same as 3 #3s.

A lot of 86 owners put a lot of time and effort into maintaining and upgrading our vehicles, why trust your $30K+ investment to a $700 or even $1000 alarm, it's just not worth it.

And for the alarm manufactures that guarantee that if your vehicle is stolen that they'll reimburse you, look at the fine print - most of them only reimburse you up to your insurance deductible...which is probably less than the cost of the alarm system anyway.

Just checked again, there is a little red light on the tacho that looks like a car next to a lock. It flashes every second. My car is a 2013, no push button start, basic audio system. I'm curious as to how this works....? Does anyone know?

That is the engine immobilizer on indicator not an alarm.

FYI to those with the higher end models that have factory alarms, they are disabled from the factory and few, if any dealers enabled it during PDI. There's a way to enable/disable it using the door lock buttons on the doors.

I think that's only available for the BRZ. Not 100% on that though
