Hi everyone. I'm deciding between two pre owned '13 brz's for sale. Both have 35kmiles. One has a Jackson racing sc kit with catback, enkei's and tires , the other is bone stock. Im trying to do my research like a smart man to help make my decision. And words of wisdom, caution, or advice? I ride bikes too so I'm not desperate for speed, just looking for a daily driver. My hesitation towards the boosted engine is reliability, I know it's a broad question, but is my hesitation warranted?

I have lots of experience owning a boosted subie, I have an outback 2.5xt 90kmiles, bought new, entirely drama free. But the jrsc brz seems like a different breed to me, increasing hp by ~40%. I'm not familiar with owning a tuned engine that has had its power increased by 40%. Are there yearly tune ups associated? Frequent diagnostics required? Power increase of 40% would seem to be asking a lot of all the other stock engine components, no? It doesn't need an upgraded clutch, etc? Fill me in because I know nothing. Thx in advance.

It is low maintenance, and the engine can handle the power increase with no problem. Only maintenance is making sure the Air Filter is clean, and change the Rotrex traction fluid every 2 Years or 50K miles.

2 years or 50k miles, same as the traction fluid.

Anyone in San Diego area willing to give me a quick ride in a Jackson Racing Carb tune car so I can have a seat of the pants feel for the power? I am in Carlsbad. Feel free to PM me so I don't derail this thread. Thanks in advance.

So my install is coming along, and the JRSC is up and running (and looks awesome with the red powder coated piping to match the intake manifold), but we've had a few hiccups along the way. Cylinder 1 began misfiring, which was diagnosed as a bad coil pack from the factory that manifested it's problem under boost. Quick fix and then back up and running.

Then, the cat in my JDL UQ FP/OP Combo Pipe blew out. Weirdly enough, the Cat in my JDL Catted UEL has had no issue, so we are thinking it was just a bad cat from JDL's distributor. Plan moving forward is to just gut the cat for now, so everything can run, and I'll probably make some exhaust changes down the line. Correction: Further inspection showed that the UEL cat blew out, and then the pieces from that blew into the FP cat and destroyed that one

With all that said, when the car was running right, I was told it was making 260whp (haven't seen a chart yet so no idea about tq) till about 7400 rpm, and they were going to see how it did going up to 8000rpm (as well as checking for any clutch slip). After that, it'll be getting its e85 tune, so a bit more after that. These numbers are from a Dyno Dynamics dyno as well.

Once it's all buttoned and running smoothly, I'll post some pics of the engine bay and dyno graphs.

Biggest lesson to be shared here to all those considering boost: whatever you think it's going to cost, factor in at least another 2K in the bank for any unforeseen issues that may arise. People say this all the time, and I made sure to do it, but you definitely don't understand it the same way until you start going through it!
Remember, these issues are with other aftermarket parts. The Jackson Racing Supercharger is (very well) proven to have ZERO issues when used in Factory Tuned (CARB) form with an OEM header and front pipe!

There are hundreds, if not thousands of cars out there, running aftermarket forced induction in the form provided by the manufacturer, that has no other issues.

Yup, they were just bad cats - gutted the UEL one, cut the front pipe one out. It’s up and running perfectly now! The coil pack was a fluke, and would have likely been noticed in a few thousand miles if I stayed NA. Once it was swapped out with an OEM replacement all was well.

No issues at all with the JRSC, and it put down 275whp/198ft-lbs on 93 and 315whp/231ft-lbs on e85 on PTuning’s DynoDynamic dyno.

All in all very pleased with the results and look forward to getting back home next week!

How audible is the Rotrex unit at idle? Based on videos it sounds like its fairly loud.

I'm still months away from installing my C30 kit. It's patiently waiting in the shed

There is no audible sound from Rotrex at idle. Whistle of the recirc valve is the only different sound at idle. Rotrex become audible only after ~3000 rpm on my car.
