CA Bill AB-645

California Roads Could Soon Have Cameras Issuing Speeding Tickets

A bill moving through the Legislature would allow cameras in six cities to issue automatic fines for vehicles driving at least 11 miles an hour over the limit (***It passed, waiting for Newsom to sign it***).

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/15/u...d-cameras.html

https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/f...202320240AB645

Quote:
The bill, A.B. 645, would create a five-year pilot program that would place cameras in six cities — Los Angeles, San Jose, Oakland, Glendale, Long Beach and San Francisco — on streets that are hot spots for street racing, or are in school zones, or have a high number of collisions.

At the outset, vehicle owners would get a warning the first time their vehicles were caught speeding by the cameras. After that, fines would start at $50. The fines could be reduced if the vehicle owner is unable to pay.

“The ticket is nominal, and there’s no points on your license,” said Assemblywoman Laura Friedman, who co-wrote the bill. “We’re out to change behavior. We’re not out to be punitive.”
So this is a pilot program, but it is likely going to progress because of take-overs, street racing, and people being idiots ruining things for everyone else. The car community has been out of control, egged on by social media and the ease of cheap horsepower, so this is no surprise. Police are overwhelmed in my area with complaints of street racing and side shows. Police lack the resources. They get people vandalizing their cars, throwing bottles at them. They now are just taking pictures of cars and license plates and towing cars at these scenes days later from the owner's homes because the scenes are too dangerous.

This is the idiotic equivalent of when my university, in an equally stupid move, banned kegs at football tailgates after a non-student, high on cocaine, shot someone at a tailgate.

Seems evident that this has nothing to do with speeding, but rather the lack of enforcement power given to the police over the last few years. And Newsom will 100% sign this rights infringing bill.

Was he upset that someone wasn't giving him beer?

You must also feel people have a right to drive through a red light at an intersection when they install those pesky intersection cameras. You don't have a right to speed, so how is this infringement?

LOL, maybe he was. Also I feel bad about laughing at that.

True, no right to speed. Ditto running red lights. But it's not really about catching the violators. The unconstitutional part is lack of due process.

In general though, it's all just an excuse to increase monitoring of the population, which nobody should be in favor of.

Cameras don't show who is driving the car. Unfair burden of proof on the defendant. Already tested in Florida court.

Not triggered at all, I enjoy this. Some pinhead who lives on Google search pukes out long winded posts and I respond to them. I can do this all day long
