Ah, the price of convenience. We're still using the top-freezer basic fridge we bought 25 years ago, making our own ice cubes in plastic trays, and drinking our well water from the faucet. Your tale doesn't go far towards convincing me towards getting the new-fangled fridges my wife drools over... thanks for the info.

It is very likely you can get a 3rd party filter for about a third of that, I know we do that with our Samsung.

You can disable the notification I think and make it manual.

Yep. I change it when the ice cubes start changing size. That's an indication the filter is not allowing enough water flow through and it's time to change.

Best I've found for the RPWFE filters is about $47. These filters include an RFID chip so the fridge and filter can "talk". The non chip filters for the older fridges (same body) are less than half the price. From what I have read, the newer fridges will not work without the chip; it will think there is no filter. Still searching for a workaround.

This reminds of the HP printers that used to refuse to work if the ink cartridge(s) were more than a year since manufacture or something like that, even if the cartridge was still fine. Haven't bought an HP product since.

I'll have to dig out the manual.

The best revenge against this is to let everyone know what brand of refrigerator you have so that everyone else will know NOT to purchase that brand. Then you can find your workaround.

This would be the workaround that I would persue:

Find the chip inside the old filter and dig it out, purchase the cheap replacement filters without the chips, and then mount the chip in the area of the chip reader. Whenever it's "time to replace the filter", move the chip out from the proximity of the reader, so that the control thinks that you are replacing the filter, and then remount it. I would suggest use Velcro. This should work, unless the control has some sort of memory built in that can learn the different chip codes (If the chips are indeed coded differently).

Cool. Also, since the point of a cardio workout is to elevate your heart rate for a given amount of time, you can accomplish the same thing by drinking a few cuos of coffee rapidly, thereby saving time, sweat, and laundry.

I think it's more complicated. From what I have read, the chip tells the fridge when the filter is done, and also detects leaks, and a few other things. I guess that is why the filter is so expensive.

most of them are timer-based, and once they hit zero, are un-resettable.

but it doesn't hurt to try!

Either way, it's totally unnecessary and I would stay far away from whatever brand of refrigerator this is........

......What brand was it again?
