I supported that stand until I actually got to see one in real life. It is far, far, FAR better up close and in person. Even the interior that looked really tacky in pictures is actually pretty nice.
If looking for a two seat luxury coupe I wouldn't hesitate now that I have actually seen and sat in one. This is a total 180 from my opinion based on pictures alone.

You're lookin at putting close to 10K into going FI on an 86 if you do it right. That's 10K you'll never get back. If you can get your head around that then you'll have a great car. A 4banger Supra non manual just does not sound appealing in the least however it will depend on your priorities though, light and quick or more luxury oriented and a new car that is in stock form.

Because a 4 banger Supra doesn't sound appealing to you (or I for that matter) that does not automatically rule it out for everybody.
As far as not recovering the cost of FI on an 86 goes you will lose that much or more on deprecation on a new car (even a Supra) so it is really a wash.

if OP is auto only, then 2.0 Supra gets my vote over other ~$40 K new sports cars and over a boosted twin right now. Toyota would probably give you a pretty nice deal on the Supra as it seems like they are struggling to move them, lots of 0% financing options for the 3.0 Supra so I bet the 2.0 will be in the same boat.

But considering the updated twins coming out and the 400Z, I would just wait it out a bit and see what options you have next year. I bet the twin turbo v6 Z will be relatively close in price to the 2.0 Supra so that would a tough choice to make on paper.

If you get a 2.0 Supra it will not remain in stock form. In more than one review it’s underwhelming for 40k. You will need a tune for sure to make it worth it. It’s not the same car as the 3.0., except for looks.

of course it ain't the same car, the 6 cyl is a torque monster, but still doesn't change that the 2.0 Supra has more than double the amount of torque the twins have which is what the OP is aiming for

What piece of the puzzle am I missing in your $10k figure?

I figure I got my value out of my FRS at this point, if it blows up I'll toss it to the side and try something different. Or maybe rebuild it, buy a crappy <$10k daily to beat up like an Abarth or GTI or old Honda, cross that bridge when we get there. That's definitely not a viable path for most people though.

Selling it would be worth an ok downpayment on a $30k-$60k car, but I do not want a car payment (or at least only a small one) so that's out. Replacement vehicle would likely be <$30k for me unless something special like the GR Yaris is available.

ok that's for the 6 cyl, we're talking about the 4 cyl here, only roughly a 300 pound weight disadvantage compared to the twins so the torque & power from the b48 is plenty...

without a stick I wouldn't consider the supra at all so it wouldn't be in my personal list for best cars to upgrade to from the twins but for a brand new automatic only coupe, the 2.0 MKV comes closest to a boosted twin. It is the lightest boosted FR coupe on the market. 230i, Ecoboost Stang, Q60, TT, F-Type, RC, etc...they are all heavier. Pretty much the only lighter choices were the 4c and now the 718 which is only about 100 lbs lighter..
