Can anyone confirm that a 2020 Head unit from a Toyota 86 will be a straight plug and play swap into a 2013 Toyota 86 GTS?

Just want to make sure I won't run into any of the issues in this thread:

https://www.ft86club.com/forums/show...2020+head+unit

Also, if the issue with the amp bypass will come into play with this swap?

Cheers all.

The amp bypass will be an issue since there is no trigger wire on the 2020 unit. The same adapter work around will do the job though.

- So in summary - Just bypass the amp

I ordered a Metra 70-1761 harness plug from Amazon for only $5. All you need to do is connect the harness wires then plug it in and enjoy surprisingly decent sound.
I am a bit confused still. For my situation (2020 86 head unit into 2013 86), do I just bypass the amp or do I need the extra harness plug? Or both? Hope someone can clarify. Cheers!

You can use the antenna amplifier output to turn the door speaker amplifier on. Read my DIY for reintegrating the stock amplifier into 2020 model year twins.

I'm afraid I'm even more confused after reading through your DIY.. My brain is not working atm..

EDIT - I think I am getting my head around it now. I will create the adapter so I don't have to splice into OEM wiring and then plug in the bypassed plug in the back to the amp. Is that pretty much it in a nutshell?

So I can just buy these adapters:

https://www.amazon.com.au/Metra-70-1.../dp/B0002BEQJ8

I believe the above is the same plug as the Scosche TA02RB? And this:

https://www.amazon.com.au/AUTOHAUX-7...%2C1320&sr=8-7

..is the same as the TA02B?

Yes to all three questions. Also, you will need the antenna adapters as well.

Keep in mind that those instructions are for a North American model. If your car is an AUS model, some of the wiring MAY be different. In that case, you are on your own. You should be familiar with the use of a multimeter in order to verify the proper connections. I suspect they will be very close to the wiring in the NA models.

Hi All, trying to figure out if this stereo has changed over the past couple of years? I search the same part number and all the local Toyota dealerships selling the unit look different now (more buttons and a volume knob) compared to the images provided where the headunit only has 4 buttons (no knob). Any help would be appreciated!

The image from Toyota are not the actual radio. From what I see on a quick google search, the image for this part number are the OEM Toyota 86 17-19 factory radio.

But you will not get this radio, PT296-18190-20 will be the radio with only 4 physical button on the left like you've seen on this thread.

Thanks so much! I figured that was the case but wanted to double check. Appreciate your response!

Nothing crazy, but just want to know if someone else experience that.
Would you be able to attach a pic of the back up camera working with the radio? Thanks!

Could you attach a pic of the back up camera working on that radio? Also on your 2016, is your back up camera wired into the 24 pin or 28 pin?

Can someone help me here? I’m trying to clarify if 2020 Subaru head unit p/n 86271ca690 is a plug and play into 2013 gen1 BRZ? Amp bypass needed but I intend to install a backup cam as well at same time as hu swap. Can I accomplish all?

I can't help with the installation of a back up cam, but I will give you advice on bypassing the amplifier in the back.....DON'T. It will sound horrible if you do. When installing the new head unit, connect the antenna trigger lead from the head unit to the amplifier turn on circuit also (in parallel with the antenna power circuit). This will allow the factory amp to turn on in order to power the door speakers so it sounds much cleaner with deeper and more accurate bass reproduction. All the information you'll need is up to step 16 in post #1 of this DIY thread, including an explanation of what it addresses.

https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145959

If you scroll down to the second post, you'll find a less expensive alternative procedure to connecting the antenna and amplifier leads together.

Trust me on this, as long as the remaining system is stock and all you're wanting to do is upgrade to the Harman head unit, you'll want to keep that rear amp in play.
